Sightseeing

Leith Hill affords some of the finest views in the south east of England and is the highest point in Surrey. To the south you will be able to see the South Downs and on a clear day you might even see The Shard and Canary Wharf in London. For a small fee (or free to National Trust members) you can climb the 74 steps of Leith Hill Tower, built in 1765. There is a small refreshment shop at the base of the tower which serves tea, coffee, soft drinks, cake and ice cream. Our property lies north of Leith Hill and we have found a super 5km circular walk which will take you from your accommodation all the way to the top of the hill and back.

The picturesque millpond at Friday Street is only a 10 minute walk through pretty woods from our house. You will pass The Stephan Langton pub which serves lunch and dinner using locally sourced ingredients. The area was once the centre of an iron industry and the houses in this tiny hamlet are well over 100 years old. You can continue your walk north following the stream and a series of ponds through the Wotton Estate. The Tillingbourne Waterfall (the highest in Surrey) is well worth a visit.

The Tillingbourne waterfall isn’t something you would normally expect to see in the heart of the Surrey countryside and it is well worth a visit. Whilst you can’t swim in the pool by the falls (it’s part of the privately owned Wotton Estate), the view of the falls is quite spectacular, especially in winter (although it’s not Niagara!). We can provide you with detailed instructions for a 6km circular walk that takes in the waterfall, nearby fishing ponds and the millpond at Friday Street.

Leith Hill Place was the childhood home of one of England’s greatest composers, Ralph Vaughan Williams, who gave it to the National Trust in 1945. It is well worth a visit and you can combine it with a walk up Leith Hill or through the Rhododendron woods. The house is full of history and intrigue, but don’t expect a perfectly restored masterpiece - it is a little rough around the edges. The house has a kitchen serving tea, cakes and scones which you can enjoy in the dining room or on the terrace. The house is closed during the winter, so check the National Trust website before visiting.

Very close to Leith Hill Tower and Leith Hill Place, the Rhododendron Wood provides a spectacular backdrop if you fancy a leisurely afternoon walk. Created in the late 1800s by Caroline Wedgwood (of pottery fame), the best time to visit is between March and May when the flowers are in bloom.

We lived in Peaslake for 13 years and have very fond memories of the village. It’s a great base from which to explore Holmbury Hill and Pitch Hill. We have enjoyed many happy visits to The Hurtwood Inn for food and drinks, although it is quite expensive. St Mark’s Church is charming and well worth a quick visit.

RHS Garden Wisley is a ‘must visit’ for garden lovers and those just looking for a interesting day out. It sits in 240 acres and is the RHS’ flagship garden with year-round appeal. The Bicentenary Glasshouse offers a little bit of the tropics (very appealing on a cold Sunday in winter) and they have just opened the Welcome Building at a cost of £20 million. RHS Garden Wisley is only 25 minutes by car from our house.

The William IV in Little London is a quiet, little pub just outside Albury and has been transformed by new owners. The interior has been beautifully designed and exudes character and charm. Although we have enjoyed a couple of drinks at the pub we haven’t eaten there yet. Reports from friends in nearby villages all say that it is very good.
