Sightseeing

Wonderful displays and amazing air shows. You can get there using train from Great Chesterford to Whittlesford Parkway then choice of 7a bus (timetables not frequent) or 45 minute walk or book a taxi from Whittlesford Station to IWM. Or use a taxi direct there. If you are happy to park at Duxford it is only 3 miles way but leave in good time on Airshow days as it gets busy.

Wonderful historic university town with a thriving market, excellent theatres of- the Arts, the ADC & the Mumford - river trips by punts. Excellent museums especially Kettles Yard, the Folk Museum and the Fitzwilliam. Walk along Kings Parade and into the Market ‘Hill’ to see where town meets ‘gown’. The view from the university church, Great St Mary’s is worth the climb. If you have time try to catch evensong in a college chapel - the famous choirs are at Kings, St John’s, or Trinity but Queens’ (my Alma mater) is also good and the choral tradition in the university & city is so strong that almost anywhere will be worth your time. Modern shopping is in the Grand Arcade but there are lots more cafes, bistros and smaller shops down Kings Parade to Trinity Street and on towards either Magdalen Bridge or back to the market centre along Sidney Street.

Allow around two hours to visit as there are several side chapels suitable for quiet reflection, and the architecture is impressive. The cloisters are rather lovely and look out for several notable pieces of modern Christian sculpture. Note you will be asked to pay entry, and also check for Service times before visiting. The town itself is a mix of modern and medieval but the updated river front by the Maltings centre is worth a stroll, and there are plenty of places for refreshments beyond the cathedral precinct towards the town centre,

Out and About

Make this a focal point to an outing to world famous Newmarket but do take a stroll on the Heath- the location of two race tracks: Rowley Mile for spring and autumn, The July for summer events including Newmarket Nights - evening races followed by live music shows. The best place to stroll is from The July Course entrance where you will also find the ancient earthworks Devil’s Duke.

The gardens here are a pleasant stroll and make a good pause point in a trip to this historic market town. Park up at the old cattle market to browse the modern shopping mall then walk down the hill through the market area towards the Abbey. Check out both the restored regency Theatre Royal, and directly opposite the Greene King Brewery (open for pre booked guided tours).
