Kara and Alex's Top Places to Eat or Drink Within Walking Distance

Our favorite neighborhood restaurants and drinking spots!!! It was hard for us to limit - so ask if you need more recommendations for restaurants close by or anywhere in Portland. We've done our best to keep things on this list updated during the pandemic but please call ahead as restaurants are changing hours, formats, etc.!!!
We love La Moule for the restaurant and the bar. Easy going, but super special menu and libations. Check out the sexy wallpaper. During busy times you may need a reservation, but we usually get a table within minutes and love to wait it out at the bar. Highlights: Butter lettuce salad, anything on the bar menu , Karmaliet trapest ale, the burger, mussels, spaetzle, and seasonal vegetable specials. Bonus: They offer heated outdoor seating all the time.

Carb heaven! A true neighborhood bakery and one of Portland's favorite places to get a traditional croissant or baguette. We love everything here and it's a common spot for us to get work done. Our favorites: Lox on spelt, ham on pretzel, the skinny continental, and the spicy Italian salami sandwich. Bonus: Loaf of slab bread known around Portland as "bread crack".

Best. Gelato. Ever. Skip the line at Salt & Straw* and go straight here. Gelato rivals the best we've had in Italy. Our favorites: Hazelnut, Pistachio, Fior de Latte, seasonal sorbettos, and, when available, coffee. *If you must try Salt & Straw, skip the line by entering through the west door and purchasing pints out of the freezer to eat on a local bench or on the back patio.

Ava Gene's has a number of "pandemic" offerings, so check their website and know you may need reservations ahead of time. Fair warning, they use anchovy to salt much of their food. If this doesn't phase you, read on... Ava Gene's get's a lot of fanfare and reservations are usually needed. Before the pandemic, for a party of two, we always just ask for a seat at the chef's bar and can get in quickly. It can be pricey, but a share with a friend! Our favorites: Giardini, borlotti bean pane, a shared pasta course, and a shared main course. We've heard the brunch is good.

Okay, about the beer, but they allow you to bring food in. Our favorite place to watch the Portland Timbers with local beer on tap and either take out. If if you have a few "must-try" restaurants while in Portland but can't get in, order takeout and bring it here. During the pandemic they have offered great outdoor seating.

The just right place when you need a slice. Usually 4-6 types of slices available. Although call ahead, as during the pandemic they have changed what they offer form week to week. Whole pizzas are great too, but have to order well ahead for take-out. Scottie's does great things for the neighborhood and community - including pay forward slice program for those in need. Our favorites: Margarita, Bianca and Sausage/Mushroom/Olive.

Down to earth, old-school bagel shop. Even though you now see Spielman Bagels chips in places like Starbucks and CostCo, this is where their bagel-magic all started and continues to keep it's neighborhood focus. Tips: If you don't want your bagel toasted, you have to ask. This is true anywhere in Portland (or the West Coast for that matter)... sigh. Great outdoor seating options.

Biscuits, pie, booze, and coffee. Need we say more?! This is the kind of place that has a little something for everyone's mood. Tip: Even though they're touted as a bakery, the savory food and salads are great.

They've just opened back up with a new menu - Filipino food with a Portland twist. This is a new-ish restaurant getting lots of national attention. Don't forget dessert! Named Portland Monthly's restaurant of the year for 2021. Check their website or call ahead during the pandemic - they keep changing their offerings up and often partner with others for weekly pop-ups. A few covered, outdoor seating options.

Perfect place to watch the neighborhood go by, taste unique natural wines, or buy a bottle. The outdoor patio is the best to watch everything happening at the Clinton 4-corners. We feel so lucky to have this close by - perhaps our most favorite wine place in the entire world. Owner Dana Frank and her staff make wine accessible for all.

We LOVE GLUTEN, but for those that can't have it, New Cascadia offers a full menu and bakery items free from gluten. Great environment for chilling, working or meeting up with friends. Our favorite treat: We love the giant Oreo-like cookie (big enough to share) with a cappuccino. It may look like they are located further away, but they relocated to SE Division street near us. A few outdoor tables.

We thought Gado Gado was the bomb but couldn't be happier that their pandemic pop-up has now turned into a full-fledged restaurant in the 'hood. Southeast Asian & Chinese meets New England! This sweet Turkish restaurant is a hidden gem that opened during the pandemic. It takes us back to a long-ago trip around Turkey. Tip: We recommend making a reservation Thu-Sun night, as they just have a few tables until indoor dining is back on.

Big secret - they offer Bahn Mi. Yah, the boba milk, teas, and fro yo are good but we're addicted to the giant Vietnamese sandwiches. Tip: Order early, they often sell out.

Ok, it may look like this restaurant is in NE Portland on Google maps, but they moved to SE Clinton/21st in the fall of 2021. We are so excited to be able to walk to the new place and have had had some of our "best meals ever" here. Great outdoor, covered, and heated options int he back and reservations are highly recommended - but on less busy night you can often get in. Go hungry and be ready to share. As well, their wine and libations are wonderful. A bit pricey, but worth it.

The crew at Jacqueline knows how to do local ingredients right! Always good to have a reservation. On a nice day, call ahead a get an outside table. Short on time - coffee and pastry from their cafe window are great... the doughnut has a following... think churro meets beignets.

Great place to taste wine and grab bites. Also a full-fledged bottle shop. Great place to stock up on special Oregon wine to take home with you. Owned by a neighbor just a few houses away, they will deliver cases, etc. depending on the time of day. A few nice outdoor tables and they serve small food plates.

Great place to try Portland's famed Olympia Provisions in a more casual way than their formal restaurants - but just as good. Incredible beer options. Great outdoor seating. Can often walk-in, but this is a neighborhood favorite and can get crowded. Reservations for popular times recommended.
