Food Scene
Go for happy hour! The line seems long but generally moves quickly and the food is worth it. Divided into $2 and $3 categories, two diners can easily piece together a meal from just a half-dozen of the restaurant’s 20 small plates. It's my favorite restaurant in Portland!
My personal HH recommendations: Chicken salad (so big for $3!), coconut prawns, and garlic string beans... a full meal for $7. My favorite (non-alcoholic) drink CA PHE COLA ($4) or order the daily HH cocktail for $6, HH beer special for $4.

Located at the Cartlandia food cart pod a mere few blocks from the house, Taqueria Brother Express may be my favorite Mexican food EVER -- huge $6 burritos, overflowing $1.25 tacos, and a variety of giant tortas for CHEAP! From savory carnitas to moist white-meat rotisserie chicken, the meats offered are a cut above many other Mexican places. Simple yet delicious.

Even better, you can take your food inside to the Barro bar and enjoy local beer and wine. Several trucks have vegan and vegetarian options.

Considered the most authentic Japanese Garden outside of Japan, the Portland Japanese Garden is a haven of tranquil beauty in all four seasons. The lovely and acoustically impressive subterranean venue hosts a discerning rotation of acts, from local heroes to touring bands. There is an outdoor patio with fire pit. A must-visit spot to see a band or just grab breakfast.
