A journey into Raufarhólshellir (The Lava Tunnel) is a unique experience and a great opportunity to witness the inner workings of a volcanic eruption as one walks in the path of lava that flowed during the Leitahraun eruption, which occurred east of the Bláfjöll mountains about 5200 years ago. Every winter spectacular ice sculptures are formed inside the entrance of the cave making the experience of visiting the lava tunnel even more breathtaking.

A journey into Raufarhólshellir (The Lava Tunnel) is a unique experience and a great opportunity to witness the inner workings of a volcanic eruption as one walks in the path of lava that flowed during the Leitahraun eruption, which occurred east of the Bláfjöll mountains about 5200 years ago. Every winter spectacular ice sculptures are formed inside the entrance of the cave making the experience of visiting the lava tunnel even more breathtaking.
At the end of the beautiful town Hveragerði, you´ll find Reykjadalur, the valley where the hot river runs through. It takes about an hour to hike up to the river where you can bath in the geothermal river.

Þingvellir (Thingvellir) is a historic site and national park and is a UNESCO world heritage site. It's known for the Alþing (Althing), the site of Iceland's parliament from the 10th to 18th centuries. On the site are the Þingvellir Church and the ruins of old stone shelters. The park sits in a rift valley caused by the separation of 2 tectonic plates, with rocky cliffs and fissures like the huge Almannagjá fault.

Not far from the cabin (30 min drive). A geothermal town with lots of local farmers selling their vegetable and fruits. Bring coins since you might have to serve yourself. Check out the hotspring Hrunalaug. Amazing to warm up in. Please make sure you respect the area and don´t leave any trash there.
Have a lunch at Fridheimar, a tomato greenhouse with tomato-based menu! It´s a very popular restaurant so make sure you book a table during high season. www.fridheimar.is/en

A 20 minute drive from our cabin. It is a small village by a lake. Laugarvatn Fontana is a spa where you come to relax and experience authentic Icelandic nature while relaxing in the warm geothermal pools and natural steam rooms. Fontana is located by a beautiful lake Laugarvatn and you can enjoy the spectacular views from the sauna or the pools.
The hostel next door to the spa has a great café/bar whith a great breakfast buffet.
