The Hatchet at Lower Chute - three miles away, remote, authentic thatched country pub which is totally dog friendly and popular with our visitors. Equally good to be in front of the log fire in winter or outside catching the last of the sun on the terrace if its good weather.

Sightseeing
Everyone goes to Stonehenge - but at Avebury Ring ( National Trust) you can actually walk around the stones, take in a country house, have lunch in a pub, visit a gift shop - all very unhurried and I have never known it crowded. Unlike its more famous " relative". Also visit Silbury hill down the road and the other Neolithic tomb across the road from it. Crop circles all but guaranteed in season !

This Trust does amazing work with birds of prey of all kinds. Its demonstrations are genuinely riveting. Go early and have lunch here, cafe type food, walk around their museum and definitely be in place for three pm and the " Valley of the Eagles" display, amongst others. Children are allowed up close to see owls and small hawks.

Its pretty much one high street, but huge variety of shops, galleries, purveyors of fine foods, boutiques and bits and bobs for gardeners - great place for christmas shopping also for lunch, hotels, pubs, bistros..... also good for people watching, everything from yummy mummies to the fishing crowd shopping in Orvis.
Essentials
Nearest for Co op and a small Tescos plus some take aways and two pubs. I must admit to preferring Marlborough, Andover and Salisbury for shopping, and there are giant supermarkets a bit further away in Andover, Tidworth....

you have to go to the cinema in Salisbury, its so incredibly old fashioned and quaint. The city also good for sightseeing shopping and eating out.
