Arts & Culture

The Wemyss School of Needlework was founded in 1877 by Dora Wemyss, inspired by the Royal School of Needlework in London. It sought to teach a skill to local girls from which they would be able to earn a living. The school now houses an important museum collection, including items made at the school, of designs and textiles dating from the 17th century to contemporary pieces collected and donated by the Wemyss family, past pupils and their families and friends of the School. My mum, Fiona, now runs the school with Sheila and Louise. Pop in for a tour of the wee museum or book in for a class. Opening hours: Wed, Thurs & Sat – 10am to 5pm Web. www.wemyssneedlework.com

Sightseeing

West Wemyss is a hidden gem. A charming fishing village with only two streets it has an unusually rich history for its size. Its origins lie in coal mining and its related activities including a gasworks and Scotland's first glassworks. The harbour, once used to export coal, is now used to land shellfish.

Parks & Nature

Walk from the Stable Yard down to West Wemyss and along the coastal path to the harbour at Dysart. You'll come across all sorts of birdlife on your walk and hopefully the seals who lie on the rocks at low tide.
