The Scala Del Bovolo is one of the most singular examples of Venetian architecture in transition from the Gothic style, well rooted in local culture, to the Renaissance one. At the end of the 15th century Pietro Contarini commissioned a new building, probably from Giovanni Candi, to add to his late Gothic palace, with the aim of visually qualifying the internal facade of the palace overlooking a small courtyard, once protected by a wall. A series of overlapping loggias connects the various floors to the airy staircase which winds in a spiral - “bovolo” in Venetian dialect - inside a cylindrical tower pierced by ascending arches.

Palazzo Grimani was the home of one of the most important families of the Venetian patriciate until the mid-19th century. It was purchased at the end of the fifteenth century by the patrician Antonio Grimani, protagonist of the political and military life of the Republic of Venice, elected doge in 1521. It is therefore a rare example of a Renaissance patrician residence.
