Volcan is an amazing little town that has become very popular over the last few years with Ex-Pats. It is predominantly a farming community but you can find trout hatcheries, orchid sanctuaries and cattle ranches as well as a variety of flower growers. While not know for it's restaurants there are several to choose from that offer great local cuisine. You can also find amazing coffee plantations and accommodations.

Las Olas is a great little resort located on the Pacific Ocean about 30 minutes from Casa Piscina. The beach is spectacular with views of the ocean and mountains both to the East and West. Sunsets are exceptional.
The resort offers day passes for beach and pool use and is a great place to spend the day. The restaurant is excellent as is their bar. I especially like the swim up feature at the pool.

Food scene
Beef is my favorite restaurant in David. It offers both indoor and outdoor dining and focuses on quality Beef as well as seafood and poultry. It is the only place in town that serves Certified Angus Beef and their selection is superb. They also have a wide range of exceptional appetizers and accompaniments to complete your dining experience.

The El Panamonte is a Historical Inn located in Boquete and houses both my favorite fine dining restaurant and bar in the area. The restaurant offers exquisite food and wine in an elegant white table cloth environment. Choose from native Trout Almondine and Filet Mignon with Mushrooms and a Balsamic Reduction or any of their incredible home-made dishes. owned by renowned Panamanian Chef Charlie Collins you simply can't go wrong. The bar at the Panamonte is incredible and offers a very tropical but elegant vibe with two fireplaces - one indoors and another outdoors. It is surrounded by beautiful gardens and offers a superb selection of specialty drinks, Cordials and wine. Try the Lemon Pie for a special dessert treat.

Local Cuisine
Panama's food is very varied. You will find that Yucca is a staple as is Plantain. Both can be cooked or fried. Plantains in particular offer a great many uses. Try them green and double fried as Patacones or ripe and fried as Platanos. Yucca is amazing with garlic and butter and my favorite is boiled and fried . Amazing!
You should ask the locals what their favorite restaurants are. I have not been to Panama in a year or so and the food scene changes rapidly. When I am there I tend to buy fresh produce and range fed meat and cook for myself - as a chef it is a culinary adventure.

Friendly local people are the norm.
If you have the opportunity to interact with local Panamanian in David you will find them to be very gracious and accommodating. Having a bit of Spanish helps , but more and more people in the area are becoming proficient in English. Of course if you speak Spanish you are good to go.
