City/town information

Palmer is a beautiful town in the heart of the Mat-Su Valley. It hosts the annual Alaska State Fair, where many other events are held throughout the year. Surrounded by both the Talkeetna and Chugach Mountains, Palmer has a lot going for it. Agriculture is huge; you’ll find farms galore, and they grow a lot of potatoes!

Food scene

This is my favorite restaurant in Wasilla. It features a Greek-Italian menu with really good food. If you’re a serious connoisseur of Italian cuisine you’ll likely be disappointed, but taking the location and the competition into consideration, you won’t hold it to elitist standards. Overall it’s a great place to take the family out for dinner, and I highly recommend it.

If you’re into Kombucha bars, this place is the best the Valley has to offer. Set up as a tasting room, 203 usually has several kombucha flavors on tap, as well some GREAT avocado toast for the Millennials ;-). During the summer it’s a great place to stop, fill up a growler, and play a game of Giant Jenga or Cornhole outside. In the winter, you can cozy up with a game of Scrabble and listen to some hits on vinyl as you sip their latest variety.

Be prepared to drive a lot

The Matanuska-Susitna Borough is roughly the size of West Virginia. It stretches all the way north of Talkeetna and Trapper Creek to Broad Pass, down to Butte and the Knik River in the south, and out past Glacier View to the east. It also has a substantial bush region (off the road system) west of the Susitna River. Whatever you are looking for, be it mountains for climbing and hiking, rivers or lakes for paddling and fishing, or spectacular wildlife for hunting or photography, you will find it in Mat-Su. Thoroughly exploring “The Valley” by road will require about 8-12 hours of driving.
