Barmouth is a special place. With a blue-flag sandy beach, lovely harbour with an eclectic array of eateries overlooking the iconic Barmouth bridge, many families return year after year & declare this little town their favourite place. During summer months there are donkeys on the beach, trampolines and a pirate ship. But Barmouth offers so many hidden gems. St Johns church overlooks the town & the mountains behind offer breathtaking views and walks: Panorama walk is named succinctly! You can cycle across the bridge and up the estuary on the disused railway track as far as Dolgellau, 10miles inland. The George iii pub is 6 miles up with good food and a welcome breather. Bike hire is available from Birmingham Garage in Barmouth.

Trains are available to Minffordd, which the stop for Portmeirion, approximately half an hour north of Dyffryn Ardudwy. Please note that dogs are unfortunately not allowed in Portmeirion. The village was an architectural experiment by Williams Clough-Ellis and was used to film The Prisoner. A lovely place to visit with shops and cafes, as well as a beach and woodland, watch out for seasonal events held here.

Right in the middle of the village, the burial chamber can be found next to the primary school & village hall. A second iron age burial site can be found up the hill by Cors y Gedol Hall, signposted by the brown signs. Clearly folks have loved this area for a very long time!

Miles and miles of sand! Benar beach can be accessed from the annexe two ways: 1. Walk straight down Station Road over the railway crossing, in approximately 20 minutes you will reach the soft sand dunes (fit walkers) or take the firmer, winding path towards the boardwalk. 2. Drive or cycle up to the main road (A496 through Dyffryn Ardudwy) then turn right. At Llanddwywye Church you will see a brown sign pointing right and you will reach a carpark at the boardwalk onto the beach. Seats are at the end of the boardwalk for reduced mobility users. The beach allows dogs but in summer months there is a restriction on dogs being allowed at the south end. They are allowed at the north end year-round. The areas are clearly signposted. Be aware that there is a nudist area slightly further north, also signposted.

Breathtaking views and a lovely picnic spot, depending on livestock (cattle and sheep graze openly up on “the Ffridd” here. Please keep dogs on leads). A fabulous circular walk through woods and over open land can incorporate this site. Visit alltrails.com to download an OS map. Maps available in local shops such as Fox’s.

Animal fun

I love this place! Just a five-minute drive from the annexe. A petting farm with a difference, this is the same place as Llanfair Slate caverns. The farmer has added a new activity for children each year, such as the rubber-duck racing challenge or mini diggers in the sandpit, water-squirters for target practice and indoor air ball-shooters! You can walk through a meadow and woodland in summer months. The caverns are self- guide (information boards available) so you can go at your own pace. Easy parking.

Vegan restaurant with a lot of locally foraged food. Each dish on the set menu will be described by the maitre d’ and she really makes this place feel special. Book ahead! It’s small and popular.

Gorgeous surroundings and a beautiful stone-built pub with courtyard and large riverside garden.
In the neighbouring village of Tal y Bont, just a 15 minute walk, Ysgethin Inn is a delightful example of a traditional Welsh pub, serving food and a selection of beers.

The Cambrian train line has a station 2 minutes walk away

Dyffryn Ardudwy is a request stop so be sure to tell the conductor when you are on board. One of the most scenic lines in the UK, the train line runs north to terminate at Pwllheli (takes 1.25hrs) hugging the coastline and passing through many villages, Porthmadog (with links to the Welsh Highland Railway for steam-punks), Criccieth (I recommend Dylan's restaurant on the promenade and then stroll to Cadwallader's for ice cream). In the opposite direction you can travel south to Barmouth and beyond over the iconic bridge to Machynlleth.

Buses

For those of you who have visited before, the bus network has improved and bus routes renumbered. Now Service G23 runs through the village and there’s a sheltered stop at the top of Station Road. There’s a timetable in the annexe for this route but for more information visit Gwynedd Council website. IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO WALK UP SNOWDON/YR WYDDFA DURING BUSY TIMES I STRONGLY ADVISE USING THE SHERPA BUS SERVICE. At the time of writing, dogs are not permitted on buses.
