Thumb Butte recreation area is only 1.5 miles from the house. Thumb Butte Trail is a 2 mile loop in the PNF forest. Features include wildlife views, kid friendly, leashed dog friendly, trail running, walking. It's a steep trail, depending on which side you go up/down.
