Legendary 3.5km-long Zicatela is the best-known surfing spot in Mexico courtesy of the tempestuous surfing waves of the Mexican Pipeline. The heart of the action, including the Pipeline, is at Zicatela’s northern end. Nonsurfers beware: the waters here have a lethal undertow and are not safe for the boardless, or beginner surfers either.

This stretch of beach runs 3.5km from the bottom tip at La Punta right up to the Playa Principal. Also know as 'The Mexican Pipeline' it attracts some of the worlds best surfers. ***Please note, this stretch of the ocean has VERY STRONG under currents and rips, it is NOT a beach for relaxing swimming*** It is, however, a great place to park up in a sun lounger all day, sip on coconuts and eat fresh food, and watch the sunset. There are plenty available up and down the beach. Recommended beach restaurants here: Punta Puerto (La Punta) Sativa (Zicatela) Sun Set Bar (Zicatela)

Apart from charging big waves, Zicatela offers a variety of beach front restaurants and plenty of shops and stores.

Most people, it seems, come to Mexico’s Pacific coastline town of Puerto Escondido for one thing… and that is to get barrelled. Either by the pipeline surf break that loops in here (peaking April through October) or by the wave of street vendors, beach bars and food establishments covering the 3.5km length of Zicatela beachfront selling micheladas, margaritas, fresh coconuts and cervezas for as little as 50 pesos a pop.
