These are known to be old Sea lions that can no longer produce or be productive, so they live the rest of their lives out here on this small island in Salinas.

At the western end of Salinas we find the Salinas Military Artillery Fort, whose entrance is guarded by three cannons and Army personnel who receive us with a smile and good treatment. They give us some directions to drive inside and get to the famous Chocolatera. A sign on the road gives us an option to take a right to go to the Chocolatera or turn left to go to the Lobería, a site of rocks separated from the coast where some dozens of sea lions have made their home. This is a great sightseeing location. There is a gazebo built in wood and guadúa which allows you to enjoy the sea and the beach. There is also a lookout point where you can spot sea lions.

La Loberia is a small but interesting destination on the coast of Ecuador, next to La Chocolatera . There is a boardwalk between the two sites. The point coming here is to the see sea lions and what is interesting about it, is that this colony generally live and breed further south in Peru and Chile (Pacific) or in Uruguay and Argentina (Atlantic). This is the further north these animals roam. We have learned that they don't breed in Ecuador. They are transitory visitors looking for easy prey (fish, anchovies, octopus). This small corner of Ecuadorian coast is protected by law and nature making it difficult, if not impossible, for fishermen to harvest in the area
