A naturally flooded historic slate quarry, the former tunnel entrance has now been filled in so can only be viewed from above. The beautifully clear water is given a eyrie blue appearance by the slate rocks. Some remnants of the Victorian slate mine workings remain such as the winding wheels, rail tracks and inclined plane.

The Blue Lake occupies high ground in the old Goleuwern Slate Quarry above Fairbourne and is one of Snowdonia’s secret gems

Note that the lower part of the lake is permanently closed. The owners have filled in the tunnel which used to give access to the lake due to the unfortunate behaviour of some tourists. However, the lake is still visible from above and the views are stunning. This former quarry is a real hidden gem.

To get to this beauty spot, you need to park on a local road and then trek the rest of the way, its about an 30 min walk to get to the top to see this view, the trek isn't for the faint hearted depending on the weather it can be slippy, you used to be able to get to the lake to swim in it, but now its just a place to admire the view.
