Just a few minutes up the road on Rt. 148, Crab Orchard Wildlife Refuge is a flat road that loops around the refuge. Although there is not a designated space for cyclists and pedestrians, vehicle traffic is used to the heavy presence of non motorized use of the road. Parking at the refuge visitors' center is free, although you will need to cross the highway to get into the refuge. You can also purchase a day pass and park anywhere in the refuge. Loop: 6 miles from the Visitor's Center. Add a mile by going across the lake where you will see many bank fishermen and people enjoying the view.

It’s the national wild life refuge. There is a Visitors Center but it has moved across the highway. There are signs pointing the way. There is also a observation deck after you cross over the lake about a mile or so on highway 148 South. You may be able to drive through the refuge area….check at the Visitors Station for details. Or call for more information.

Crab Orchard Refuge is a great place to ride a bike, hike, fish, boat, kayak, camp, swim and more. You do have to buy a pass to access the property.
