Travel between the villages of Greyton and McGregor via a trail that passes through the Riviersonderend Mountains. You can complete the trail in one day, but it’s considered an overnight hike because participants like to return to their starting point the next day (you could arrange transport if you’re not up for the return walk). Either way, the trek offers spectacular scenery, and the opportunity to spot mountain-dwelling wildlife such as klipspringers, caracals and even the elusive leopard.

Easier hiking trails are the following: Where? Start at Krige Road in Greyton, Cape Overberg, Western Cape When? Daylight hours. Distance: 3km Time: +/- 1-2 hours Greyton offers the 3 kilometre Loerkop hiking Trail which will take you about 1 hour 30 minutes to complete. The route starts on the low bridge on Krige Road where you can often see kingfishers sitting on the branches above the river. Parts of the hike are steep so take care and ensure you bring water with you. On route you may be lucky enough to spot an abundance of wildlife so get your binoculars and camera at the ready as you may be lucky enough to spot antelope, Grey Reebok and blue cranes. Continue along the path and as you reach the top you will notice the spectacular views over the Riviersonderend Mountains. The native Fynbos is beautiful and ever changing with the season Lower Gobos Walk The Lower Gobos Walk is an easy walk of four kilometres that takes about an hour to complete. There is a picnic spot as part of the trail, which is a fantastic way to revel in the beauty of the area after enjoying the walk. To access this trail, take the Riviersonderend Road out of the little town of Greyton. Then, follow the river to the picnic site, where the trail begins. Maermanskloof hiking trail Start: lower end of Nerina Street at the old Cape Nature Conservation camp, Greyton Finish: lower end of Nerina Street Duration: 5 km, roughly 3 hours Fitness: moderate to difficult Our tip: remember hats and water when it is hot The Greyton Conservation Society has been hard at work, with the help of the Greyton Municipality, to carefully mark walking paths and hiking trails in and around the village. Maermanskloof hiking trail is one of these. Do not let the short duration of the hike fool you into thinking that it is easy. For it is both steep and demanding, climbing from 230m at its lowest point to 568m at its highest. But the climb is worth it. Starting at the lower end of Nerina Street it begins by way of the stone gate, and follow the jeep track right ahead of you. It will take you up and over the rise. A little later look out for the Gobos River at which you take a right onto a small path that climbs further still. Now you head out across a series of hills, tackling paths that look steep but are not as bad as they seem. The viewpoint is the highest point of the walk. From up here the views are incredible over the Riviersonderend Mountains. South of here you can now see the path that leads down into Maermanskloof valley. Follow this up the neck and down along a jeep track. On the descent you will cross another jeep track before coming to Weltevreden farmhouse. A bench a little further on affords a gentle break with views out over Greyton. A zig-zag path takes you back down through the picnic site. Gifkloof Trail The Gifkloof trail is a dog-friendly running, hiking, mountain-biking and horse-riding trail, running alongside the river in Greyton. Start the trail at the junction of lower Regent Street and Vlei Street, and walk, cycle or ride across town, where you’ll experience magic views of the Hottentots-Holland mountains, farmland and the quaint town of Greyton. Remember to pack refreshing drinks and picnic goodies, as the trail begins and ends at a gorgeous picnic spot by the river. It's a great afternoon out with little ones.

This is a long hike that requires planning and booking ( 14kms). Most people start the hike in Greyton and hike over the Riviersonderend Mountains to McGregor. You could also walk the trail to McGregor and stay overnight or have someone pick you up and drive back to Greyton. It is worth the experience.

If you're up to it, hike to Greyton - about 6 hours - but you will need to fix a lift back as it's over 100 ks by road! Or just go as far as the 3 beautiful cascading waterfall pools (2 hours each way) and have a swim and maybe take your breakfast before setting off back. Permits from Tourism Office in McGregor.
