Food Scene

This is a great little soup and sandwich cafe! They serve custom sandwiches, baked goods and homemade soup. The sandwich bread is freshly made on site. You can walk to it from our house but try to avoid the lunch hour rush as it is very popular with the health care workers from the hospital up the road.

Alberta is known for it's beef and the Keg located just up the road from us cooks up a great steak! We like to go into the basement lounge area as it is really cosy, they offer the same menu as upstairs and you can usually get into the lounge without waiting.

Entertainment & Activities

We have a world class zoo here in Calgary. Book off a few hours to get around the whole park. Make sure you save time and energy for the Canadian Exhibit as it is a long but interesting walk.

The Calgary Stampede is the "Largest Outdoor Show on Earth" If you are visiting during Stampede (This year it runs from July 8-17, 2016) you will have tons of activities that you can join into! Stampede is a 10 day EVENT and not all the festivities are on the actual grounds. Calgary offers complementary stampede breakfasts all over the city every morning of Stampede so you can pretty much eat free the entire time. There will be signs posted in communities and they are listed in the newspaper or online. We have a community breakfast held at "Woods Homes" just down the street and there is a bigger more elaborate one at Market Mall a 5 min drive away. Don't miss the parade it is lots of fun for first timers. We will leave you a couple of chairs and if you go early you can usually find a spot along the road.( We go without chairs as I don't like carrying them and we can move easier, but I am always envious of those who made the extra effort and look so comfy.) There is virtually no parking during the parade so take the bus as it is much easier. Here's our transit site: http://www.calgarytransit.com Calgarians (and tourists) go crazy over stampede week. Offices shut down and people party...a lot! Our home is in a quiet neighbourhood so don't worry about a good nights sleep but we are close enough to downtown that if you want to get into the party/nightclub scene it is very easy. Here are some places to try out but truthfully, anyplace downtown will be a blast. Oh and I guess there is the actual Stampede as well! It is really an amazing display. There are grandstand shows, exhibitions and rides and if you are a rodeo fan it is unparalleled! I can't describe it all so here is the link to the official website http://www.calgarystampede.com/stampede

Parks & Nature

Banff is a beautiful and quaint little town located about an hour and a half from our house. It is super easy from our location to get on the highway so if you have rented a car, this is a vacation must. The drive is gorgeous and the mountain views are iconic. There are tons of biking/hiking paths, shops and restaurants and no Banff trip would be complete without visiting The Banff Springs Hotel.

Arts & Culture

The Royal Tyrell Museum is considered one of the best Dinosaur museums in the world. It is about 1 hour 45 min drive, and well worth the effort. When you enter the badlands it's like going back in time and the museum is very good! They perform the Canadian Badlands Passion Play in the outdoors during stampede and it is such a great performance I would highly recommend it! Showtimes are limited so book in advance and plan a whole day to tour the museum and catch the show. Here is the website for both: http://canadianpassionplay.com http://tyrrellmuseum.com
