Parks & Nature

This is the starting point for a few walks or just a paddle in the burn. Go over the style (too steep for most dogs) and walk up the hill to the loch and come back again. Or keep going and eventually get to Methven. Alternatively go up Little Glenshee all the way to Amulree (about 4 miles).

There are a couple of options here for you depending on how far you would like to walk. The shortest is just a mile and takes you to the Hermitage - a look out spot over the falls. Can you spot the salmon jumping? The trees you will pass are some of the Douglas firs planted by Mr Douglas himself!

The falls at Buchanty are a great place to see the salmon jumping in Autumn. The colours of the trees and nearby arboretum are just beautiful. Please be VERY careful on the slippery rocks.

This is a RSPB reserve where a pair of Osprey come back every summer to lay their eggs and hatch their young. The interactive visitor centre is great for children and adults alike. If you would like to make it a more energetic visit why not park in Dunkeld and walk up the hill (Please note it's quite steep).

A beautiful loch to see 'classic' Scotland. Why not get Wee Adventures to take you out on the water in canoes? There is also a lovely cafe called the Paperboat, right on the water at the Killin end. And just up the road is one of the best haberdashery's in Scotland!

Arts & Culture

This is where the kings of Scotland were crowned! The grounds are beautiful with a fabulous maze, a pinetum (collection of pine trees) and one of the first Douglas Firs to be planted in the UK as Mr Douglas started his career at Scone. There is a cafe in the Palace as well as a children's playground to discover. Inside the Palace is the usual stately home tour. A great day out for the whole family.

This makes for an interesting visit. It's not very big but has been the site of a couple of recent historical films.

Shopping

This is the go-to farm shop. The farming family started selling their eggs from the shed in their garden and now they have a bustling café serving a variety of Scottish dishes including great breakfasts. The shop has a large selection of Scottish gins and beers, a great cheese offering as well as fresh fruit and vegetables, artisan chocolates, biscuits, cakes and jams made on site and more! Non food items include fancy children's clothing and toys, varied books and some of the best cards around. If you are lucky their Highland cows may be in the paddock next to the carpark. Quite the shopping experience. Open every day from 9am to 5pm.

Known by some as the "Harrods of the North", the House of Bruar is quite an experience. You can stock up on hunting paraphernalia, tweed, cashmere and any Scottish food or drink you can think of.

This has been voted the best Organic cafe in the UK and you will see why when you tuck into their amazing galettes or sip a vibrant juice. The coffee isn't bad either! They also have a great organic shop selling their own veg, as well as plants, all sorts of food, teas, coffees and more. Mix it with a visit to Falkland Palace.

We ate here at the end of 2019 and were very impressed with its recent overhaul. The food was really good with some very interesting dishes. It's not too formal so good for children too. Have a walk in Taymount Wood on your way and see the biggest hedge in the world at Meilklour.

Sightseeing

Dunkeld and Birnam is a lovely town. Once the centre of Scottish power ( a long time ago!) it has a wonderful charm with the Tay river running through it and enormous trees all around. There a numerous walks, dip in and out of the independent shops or visit the Beatrix Potter museum in the Birnam institute. Small children will love all the interactive bits and pieces! There is also great live music in many of the pubs during the week and weekends.

The Crannog centre is a wealth of information about the earliest people living in Scotland. They have built a replica Crannog - a round building perched on stilts in Loch Tay. The guided tour is really interesting and children and adults alike are amazed at how people lived here hundreds of years ago. Find out about how to make fire with sticks and leaves, turn wood and dye materials using plants.

Falkland Palace is still owned by the Crown Estate and is beautifully preserved. Once the home of Mary Queen of Scots, the Catholic chapel here is still in regular use. The gardens are quite spectacular, and the village of Falkland is also lovely to wander around. It is expensive but absolutely worth it.

Stirling Castle can be seen for miles and is worth the journey. It has been completely overhauled to allow an interactive, fun experience for the whole family. Particularly good if your children need to run around, they can dress up, jump on the canons, ask the staff in costumes funny questions and basically have a great time. If you are also planning on a visit to Edinburgh Castle, you can get a cheaper joint ticket.

Probably the most shouted about building in Scotland this century, the V&A is quite something. Just the architecture is worth a visit, but the free exhibition on Scottish design upstairs is well worth a visit. The food in the restaurant upstairs is lovely too but don't forget to book.

There are two reasons to visit Blair Castle - for the beautiful walled garden or for the thoroughly packed Castle, or do both but leave lots of time as there is so much to see. The castle is particularly interesting if you are into Scottish military history - did you know this is the only pace in Europe that has it's own private army? The stairs have narwal tusks as hand rails! The garden has long herbaceous borders, an orchard and swans. The cafe is quite nice. Perhaps tie it in with a visit to the shopping mecca House of Bruar.
