These local restaurants are (mostly) within an easy walk of my house and are worth checking out.
Tiny, cooperatively owned coffee shop. Cash only. Fun little spot. Go for coffee and conversation, not food (but they will have some basic food options). Just 2.5 blocks away.

Outstanding, creative food. Named a "Best New Restaurant in America" and won the 2019 James Beard Award for "Best Chef Midwest." Reservations recommended, but they do have a community table available for walk-ins. Expect a wait--and do your waiting in the Speakeasy Bar off the back alley.

Crazy popular neighborhood spot serving English-style fish & chips, Shepard's Pie, burgers, etc. Beer & wine. Small, intimate atmosphere. Sometimes easier to get seated if you opt for the "bar" versus a table or booth. Reasonably priced, solid food, tends to be crowded with wait times at peak dinner hours. Not open for lunch except on weekends when they offer great breakfast, including the Full Whack. Yowza. Closed Mon. 2 block walk.

Pleasant place to grab a glass of wine and casual dinner. The Peacock opens onto Erte, a higher-end restaurant, which is really nice. Peacock has a full bar and bar menu. Beautiful, Old World-style atmosphere. 2.5 block walk.

Solid, moderately-priced menu of burgers, "Beer Can Chicken," big-ass chicken sandwiches (yes, please), salads and specials, this is a very comfortable, affordably priced neighborhood dining option. Comfy (big!) booths and a 100-can cooler of beers, mostly local craft brews. 3 block walk.

Very popular Asian street food place, nominated for 2019 James Beard Award and welcomed enthusiastically by the neighborhood. (And locals love the name, which means "22". Northeasters have been celebrating holidays, graduations, weddings and anniversaries at Jax Cafe for more than 100 years. With its classic supper-club decor (white table cloths, wood) and menu (steak, lobster, chops), it's Old School but pretty awesome. You can even catch your own trout from their pond out back (not during winter). Happy Hour is a secret bargain at the bar; lovely patio in warmer months. Corner of University & 20th—about a 6 block walk.

Coffee meets art! Located in the California building, one of NE's oldest artist buildings, Mojo has creaky wood floors, wood beams, an old industrial warehouse vibe. Coffee, daily specials, soups, salads, sandwiches, breakfast items. Plus, they often showcase an artist demonstration in the corner. Huge art display of pottery, paintings, sculpture, etc. In summer, sit outside on the wooden deck enclosed with vines. Love this place. Check the California Building's online events calendar for open studio dates, when you can wander through the building, meet artists and check out some really extraordinary work.

Small plates (get it, "sample" room?) and a full bar, nice atmosphere, outdoor seating in summer, and a spot right on the Mississippi (although you don't have river views in the restaurant). But you can walk outside and down the stairs onto the dock that stretches out into the Mississippi (or, maybe that's trespassing!? Oops, I do it all the time.) Nice spot. Moderately priced.

This place has a sprawling outdoor patio right on the Mississippi — on a hot summer day, you better head over early to get a table because huge crowds will descend. The view and the vibe are worth it. I'm not a fan of the food, which is just ok. But people go for the crazy exotic drinks, the fun scene, the view. Parking can get challenging, easier just to walk over.

Is it a restaurant? A bar? A mini golf course? A carnival ride? Yes. All of the above. Take a ride in the Ferris Wheel while sipping a cocktail and snacking on an app. Owned by the same woman who brought us Psycho Suzi's Motor Lounge just down the street, Betty Danger's can also be a crazy scene at peak hours in nice weather. But ... a Ferris Wheel. Also worth it to just walk that way at dusk and see it lit up against a darkening sky.

Critics are raving (2019 James Beard Award nomination for Best New Restaurant) about both of these Mexican-inspired restaurants: Popol Vuh, dinner only, is pricier (quality ingredients and wood-fire cooking) and has a more extensive menu; Centro (lunch-late night) offers a raw bar and tacos. Both take a deep dive into agave spirits & cocktails. Located in a wonderfully gritty corner of NE, close to Indeed Brewing.

Home of the Greenie, a NE Mpls rite of passage (sticky, green, sweet/tart drink that kinda tastes like vodka-infused Sprite kool-aid). Long, narrow, dive bar that now features a new partnership with expert chef/restaurateur known as Burger Dive. Very tasty burgers, wings, etc--a serious cut above standard bar food.

Maya Cuisine is awesome. The front features counter service, really affordable Mexican food that is seriously top notch (my friends swear by the tamales, but everything is good). Drinks & Nightlife

NE Mpls is home to an awesome collection of dive bars, 3 of which are within a stone's throw of my front door. If you hear some sudden whooping and hollering, it may be the (drunken nuts on the) Pedal Pub passing by (sigh) as it makes the rounds of our corner watering holes.
Closest dive bar to my front door: I can get to Shaw's back door in 2 minutes. Bar food is decent (the Shaw burger requires 5 napkins, the Sun burger is a long-time NE fave). Monday night is Blues Night—one of the best-kept secrets in town. Live music almost every night, almost never a cover. Everyone at the bar is a regular who will be at the bar tomorrow night, too. Owner Mike Shaw used to give me huge contributions when I went begging for the local elementary school silent auctions, and I've loved him and his bar ever since. You want a dive bar? Head to Shaw's.

Dive bar extraordinaire. Beware: my daughter claims you cannot go to the Knight Cap and not get drunk. Heavy pours, cheap, lively, more hipster-ish vibe, but still a great corner dive bar. Limited food available too (Heggie's!). I'd pick Knight Cap over Mayslacks across the street (but Mayslack's has a cooler space—old pressed tin ceiling, great wooden booths—and a much more extensive menu). Knight Cap is more of a townie bar.

Stanley's has a pretty full menu--it's kind of an upscaled dive bar (in fact it replaced a longtime NE dive bar awhile back). Dog-friendly patio with a dog menu, so be prepared to see some pups. Tends to be lively and fun, mid-range prices, younger crowd. ALSO, there's a secret speakeasy upstairs open Thurs-Sat nights at 5 pm. Enter through the photo booth by knocking on the back wall. The club made famous by Prince and Purple Rain. Minneapolis loves Prince. Always has, always will, and woe to the person who disses him (although... who would??). It used to be a railroad bridge across the Mississippi, then somebody had the brilliant idea to turn it into a pedestrian bridge for walkers and bikers. Yes! Walking across is pretty much required for all Mpls visitors. Great views of the river, St Anthony "falls" (don't expect an actual waterfall), and a bird's-eye view of Mill Ruins Park, a cool archeological dig that has exposed the early milling buildings along the banks of the Mississippi.
