With great food and a beautiful setting right on San Diego Bay near the airport, this is one of our favorite places to go for lunch or dinner. It's not cheap, but it's not the most expensive place in town either. In the other half of the building is a more expensive and elegant place called Island Prime which is a good splurge.

Also called the Walking on Water Café, this is a fun place out near the end of the Ocean Beach Pier. The food isn't fantastic, but it's good - and where else can you eat right over the ocean on a pier? It's always fun to watch the fishermen and surfers who frequent the pier area as well as lots of seagulls and pelicans too :) If you aren't hungry for breakfast, lunch or coffee, just come for the great walk, which we like to do pretty often :)

Drinks & Nightlife

We love going to the Shout House because we are music nerds, and their piano players are amazing musicians, and very funny too! We love the dueling piano format, and it's casual and the food and drinks are inexpensive too. Check their website because some nights have a small cover charge.

Entertainment & Activities

We've always enjoyed Sea World because it's a place to learn about our amazing sea life and develop an appreciation for them and their environment. Check their website, there are usually online ticket specials :)

Parks & Nature

A beautiful place to walk/hike by the beach, with stunning views of the ocean and groves of Torrey Pine trees, which apparently don't grow anywhere else on earth :) There's a fee to get in but it's worth it if you want to drive up to the top of the bluffs and walk around up there.

Balboa Park has a fantastic assortment of museums, gardens and dining opportunities. On Sundays, the International Cottages from the 1912 Panama Exposition are open with foods and dancing/music from their native countries. Every Sunday at 2pm there is a free organ concert in the Spreckles Organ Pavilion in the center of the park. Lots of free things to do as well as reasonable admission prices to the museums. We love going there to walk around during the day and it's also beautifully lit up at night :)

Cabrillo Monument is about a 15 minute drive from our home and is out at the tip of beautiful Point Loma. We love to go walking around there to see the old lighthouse, the whale overlook, the museum/gift shop, movie theater and the stunning views of downtown San Diego and the ocean beyond. There are also tidepools down on the northwest side. It costs $10.00 to get in for a day, but it's worth it. If you have a National Park pass, you can get in free to any national park or national monument - it's a great deal!

We love living in Mission Bay Park! It's so nice to just drive or walk down the hill to the bay and be able to walk along the water or picnic whenever we want to - and it's FREE! Mornings and evenings are especially nice by the water, with picnic tables, playgrounds, barbecues, fire rings and great views. Nearby Fiesta Island is a leash free dog area, and also a fun place to have a fire in the fire rings in the evenings.
