This place in recent years has undergone a turnaround. Now it is a funky bar which still welcomes locals. Downstairs is one of Beechworth's best restaurants. If you can't get in to the restaurant, the bar food is still a great option. Worth making a booking.

Good pasta and a great atmosphere. We particularly like the not-too-bright lighting.

This is a very popular brewery and pizza place for locals and visitors. The atmosphere is great, it's kid-friendly with a play area outside and the pizza is a quality product.

One of Australia's finest regional museums with a good overview of the area's gold history, Ned Kelly, birdlife and fauna. There's even a 19th century shopping streetscape inside the museum.

Neighbourhoods

There is a lot to see in the North East. Here's a selection of our favourite local destinations.
Stanley is our favourite local village. Charming rural village with small orchards producing hazelnuts, walnuts, winegrapes, apples, cherries, chestnuts and berries. The autumn colours in particular are a delight. Don't forget to stop at Hillsborough Quality Nuts for Anita's amazing scones and coffee, overlooking their beautiful property.

There's a lot to see in Milawa. Cheese tasting at Milawa Cheeses, mustards, gin and smoked meats. Brown Bros is also a good place to stop to taste their wine and enjoy tasting their wines.

This is a great little town. The monthly Myrtleford Farmers' Market is accredited, meaning all things sold there are locally-grown and produced. It's held on the fourth Saturday of the month. Red Ramia is a fantastic place to have a refreshment and do some shopping for the quirky and unusual. There's also great Vietnamese food in town and the best hamburgers in NE Victoria at Ruby's Takeaway.

Everyone loves Bright. In winter the snow-capped alps beyond Bright frame your entry to town. In autumn the leaves are magnificent and in summer it's an oasis with lots of fun around the Ovens River. The town is pleasant to wander around with lots of little nooks and crannies to explore and the scenery just getting there, along the Ovens Valley as you head upstream, is worth the drive in itself.

Mt Buffalo is a winding drive up a steep road from Porepunkah. The views on the way up are fantastic and there are even better views from the top. From The Chalet, you look down on the Ovens valley below, all checkerboard farming wedged between the mountains and beyond to Mt Bogong, Victoria's highest mountain. At the end of the road, you reach The Horn carpark, from which there is a ten minute well-marked path to the top of the enormous boulder that crowns the summit. From the (frequently windy) top, there are great views all around. The Horn Road is closed at the ski area car park in winter.

Just the drive to the upper King Valley is a treat: gorgeous scenery, surrounding mountains, Mt Buffalo to the east and hillsides covered in vines. Wine - specifically prosecco - and food are the highlights.

Sightseeing

The best views are just before you get to the town of Mt Hotham proper, looking back to the west up the winding road you've just driven up. Be prepared for cold and winds any time of the year and in winter, make sure you've got snow chains.
