I can't say enough good things about this quaint, family-run business. The food is authentic and delicious. It's affordable for the whole family. Dine in, outside on the patio or take with you. They are open everyday from 11am to 6pm except Sundays.

Parks & Nature
The trail is below the bluff and lookout on Skyline Drive - the road connecting Old 51 and Hwy. 127. Walk begins and returns to Alto Pass entrance-an easy & scenic trail on the former railway bed. Easy walking or bike ride. Choice to climb the stairs up to the Skyline overlook(which can also be accessed by car just outside of Alto Pass). Rock climbers enjoy the bluffs.

Holy Boulders has the largest concentration of boulders in Southern Illinois. October to April is the best rock-climbing season in this area, both for temperature and minimal ticks etc.

We'll need to give your directions to Kaolin pond, although it is located on the Shawnee Hills Forest Map(USDA Forest Services) if you have one. It's a great swimming hole and has a hiking trail. Nice spot for a picnic as well. A former clay pit, there are still pockets of clay in the pond that you can dig up and shape. Water is about 35 deep in the former clay quarry.

You will love the drive through this park. There are several great trails and unique rock formations. Stop at the Visitor Center for trail maps and recommendations. Lodge open for meals most of the year. You might also want to climb the tower outside of the lodge for a spectacular view! Open all year. There is also seasonal camping, horseback riding and places and Giant City Lodge.

The first part is fine follow it across the creek and up the next hill, you will come to a marker telling you to turn left to the rock formations.... In a short distance down the hill you will come across the rock formation...continue north, down the hill on the established trail, you will come to the creek again, cross it and stay on the trail, (you may see a sign that says panther den with an arrow telling you to turn right, ignore it) follow the creek, crossing it again, the trail heads up the hill to the left, which shortly heads back south towards the trail head..." Follow signs.

Small town museums are interesting to those who like that kind of thing. This museum also has a gift store attached that raises money for the museum. A separate building holds the Historical & Geneological Society where they often hold art exhibits and other local displays and presentations. Cobden originally had a People's Market where local growers brought their fruit, veggies, flowers, milk etc to be bought and then shipped via train to Chicago. It all happened in Cobden. Locals say "All roads lead to Cobden" and you'll note there are many ways to get in and out! The Museum & gift shop are open 1pm to 5pm Saturday and Sunday or Friday by chance or appointment.

On the way up to Bald Knob you will pass through the historic town of Alto Pass. Pick up something for a picnic at Grammer's Market. Alto Clay Works is located on the way out to Hwy. 127. You'll also find Rendleman Orchards Market, Van Jacob Winery and Alto Vineyards as you head west.

The small town was made especially famous as the center and longest duration for two eclipses in 2017 and again in 2024. Shops have local art, some of it being made right on the spot by longtime residents. Makanda Trading Post is a favorite selling international wares chosen by the owner in his travels. Healing Traditions offers yoga and massage. Things are often happening but you have to go down and see. Ask to see the Secret Garden :)
