A 'Must See' King John built the castle in 1185. In 1589 the castle was occupied by the explorer, Sir Walter Raleigh who sold it in 1602 to Richard Boyle after his imprisonment for high treason. His son, Robert become known as the Father of Modern Chemistry. In 1753 the castle passed through marriage to the 4th Duke of Devonshire, William Cavendish, who was later to become the Prime Minister of Great Britain and Ireland. Adele Astaire; Fred Astaire's sister, lived in the castle with her husband the 9th Duke and used the castle until just before her death in 1981. Today's family only live in the castle for a short period each year, their main residence being Chatsworth House.

From Cappoquin take the R669 eastwards. At the junction where there is a statue between the two roads, veer right. Cross a bridge and turn immediately left into a car park beside the river. Take the forestry track upstream from the car park. This track takes you up the steep side of Glenshelane through a forest which has a mixture of Oak, Beech, and lots of scrub. Do not take the footbridge you meet as the best is yet to come! http://www.dungarvantourism.com/welcome/web?task=Display&art_id=102

Local lore suggests that the grand entrance lodges were built as a prelude to an extravagant mansion that Keily-Ussher intended to build but never did as he ultimately ran out of funds due of their construction, and that his building pursuits were spurred on by his jealous wife who was envious of her sister in-law who lived at the stately Strancally Castle

The monastry was founded on 30 May 1 at Scrahan, Cappoquin, by a colony of Irish and English monks, expelled from the abbey of Melleray after the French Revolution of 1830, and who had come to Ireland under the leadership of Fr. Vincent de Paul Ryan. It was called Mount Melleray in memory of the motherhouse. On the feast of St. Bernard, 1833, the foundation stone of the new monastery was blessed by the Most Rev. Wm. Abraham, bishop of Waterford and Lismore. Visit the Heritage Centre, tearooms, bookshop, and the chapel in this beautiful, peaceful and scenic monastery.
