Food Scene

This is a dream come true. A great bakery just next to my house. This will be great for my carb count and we know that this is what winter is all about. As you wait in line and take in the scent of fresh bread, you see the busy bakers work through the glass wall. They seem happy as making bread is an act of love, especially natural sour doe bread like they use here. Grab anything, the baguette, the cheese baguette, the basic sour doe, the full wheat. The sweets, oh my the sweets that will stare at you with evil temptation while you wait in line. The staff is friendly and patient, they will look away if you had one too many of the sample tasting near the register :)

Montreal is famous for its Jewish food. Hof Kelsten is the true meaning of New Jewish Cuisine. Taking traditional recipes and stepping them up to the 21st century without trying to invent the wheel. The Matzo ball soup is incredible, it is very different than the ones at regular delis- they smoke the bones prior to cooking it, giving a very rich flavour. The chopped liver is smooth and manages to be light. The baked goods are remarkable and if you are lucky enough to get there on Friday- Get the Challah! The chef, Jeffrey Finkelstein went back to his roots after working at prominent kitchens around the world. His love to his nana's food became a joy to the food community in Montreal.

Vegan and queer friendly rad café with charming flea market decor. Tasty and generous burito and satisfying taco. Good pastries as well. If you need some laptop time this is one of the only hip cafés that is open until midnight. There are often live shows in backroom. The soups are hit or bust so make sure to ask for a taste before you order one. Tip: very affordable lunch combos. Notice: It's closed on Mondays.

Great café for some laptop time. Join the laptop line on the big central table, enjoy the best smoothies and cold press juices in town and pet the giant lazy Bernese dog. They have great cakes and muffins with vegan and gluten free options.

This is not only the biggest market in Montreal, in summer it's the biggest open market in North America with fresh local produce all year long, amazing little eateries and local beers. Before getting fresh produce, eat the best street tacos in town (3 for 5$ with pulled pork) and sit down on the oyster bar for desert. Make sure to check the stores on the side streets as well. You can easily spend half a day here and you should!

Just writing about this place is making me drool. This is truly the Best dumpling spot in town. Take anything, mostly steamed, try one fried. Don't over do it, it's 15 dumplings a pop, and enjoy yourselves. Tip: after eating, go to a Chinese grocery store and try a fruit you never tried before.

This is a classic Quebec 24 hours diner, with some magic in their poutine gravy and colorful clientele. If there's a hockey match playing on the TV, no one will talk to you, not even the staff. This place is as local as it gets. I find it to be the best trashy poutine in town. A classic way to end a night out or a show at the Corona Theatre. Tip: Order the mini poutine- it's big enough.

This is a coffee temple, they make their own coffee, extremely knowledgeable about it, and if you are lucky enough to see a coffee tasting of a new batch is made, you get to see what a true passion looks like. I would call it a lab for excellency but the friendly staff makes it into a very welcoming space. Don't hesitate to ask anything, they will gladly talk to you about everything that has to do with coffee, from the farms it grows at to the procedure of making it. This is a place to explore, try new things, or just get a good old cup of joe and relax at the terrace, watching the awakening of the Mile-Ex neighborhood.

Everything Else

This place was documented in the books of famous Canadian author Mordecai Richler. It was founded by Moe Wilensky in 1932. Moe invented the Wilensky special" - a grilled beef salami and beef bologna sandwich with mustard on a kaiser roll, pressed flat on the grill. The place is a time capsule for diners of the 30's and they keep it the same as a principles: It's impossible to get the toast without mustard, they never cut the toast in half and employees are not willing to accept a tip. Celebrity chef, Anthony Bourdain visits the place in almost every documented to Montreal. This will not be a transcendental experience for the taste buds Yet the old deli, the lines of pressed sandwiches on

Drinks & Nightlife

This hip caribbean-soul-food spot has a regular lineup so prepare to wait. The atmosphere is always vibrant, the tunes are masterly curated by serious caribbean DJ's. The starters are all really good, I heratly recommend the plantains and the avocado salade. The rum selection is impressive and it is meticulously blended into delicious traditional and original cocktails. Montreal has such a rich caribbean community & culture and It's great to see it become a part of the city's culinary/bar scene. During summer the beautiful terrace has it's own caribbean BBQ menu. Tip: If you like your liquor neat like I do, forget the cocktails and try different aged rums. It's a whole world of tastes.

Parks & Nature

I love this parc. It has a great swimming pool, picnic tables, kids playgrounds and summer screenings, and tango nights. It can get a bit too packed during summer, never the less it is a neighborhood jem. Tip for groups: buy some beers and fruits at the Metro store nearby and make an impromptu picnic. Tip for loners: at the heart there is a garden with wooden beds- perfect for reading a book in the sun.
