Built originally by Llywelyn the Great, this very Welsh of princes included a very English style of gatehouse. Edward I’s forces took the castle some 50 years later, undertook their own improvements and remodelled a tower for stone-throwing engines. Not as much fun for those at the bottom as it sounds for those at the top! Owain Glyn Dŵr sealed Criccieth’s fate when his troops captured and burnt the castle in the early years of the 15th century. This was to be the last major Welsh rebellion against the English. Criccieth Castle may also have given the name to the town rather than the other way round. Its suggested origins are ‘crug caeth’ – ‘crug’ (hill in Welsh), ‘caith’ (captives)

The newly installed ‘floating’ bridge at Harlech Castle makes access to the castle truly available for all. The bridge connects the castle with the brand new visitor centre in the former Castle Hotel building. Along with Caernarfon Castle, Conwy Castle and Beaumaris Castle, this monument has been part of the Castles and Town Walls of Edward 1 World Heritage Site since 1986.

Standing tall over the village of Llanberis, Snowdon is a part of a close-knit family of jagged peaks and can offer views of Snowdonia, Anglesey, Pembrokeshire and Ireland. Choose from six different paths to conquer this 1085 metre giant: The Llanberis Path, Pyg Track, Miners’ Track, Watkin Path, Rhyd-Ddu Path or the Snowdon Ranger Path.

Parks & Nature

We have some beautiful beaches around us. Minffordd itself has an estuary which is accessible by car although one must pay heed to the tides as it comes in very suddenly and can cut you off. 'Black Rock' sands can be driven onto and is a huge expanse of golden sand. 'Borth y Gest' is a beautiful small harbour with pockets of sandy coves but can only be accessed by foot. 'Criccieth' beach is shadowed by Criccieth castle and has ample parking on the promenade .The beach is pebbly with a lovely view of the surrounding mountains. We also have 'Harlech' beach with golden sands stretching forever . There are many more beaches on the Lleyn Peninsula with awesome views.

Blaenau Ffestiniog has for as long as anyone can remember been known as "the town that roofed the world". Slate was how Blaenau made its name, and the town is immensely proud of its industrial heritage. From a cluster of farms a bustling town grew, and a number of quarries were opened; one of them, Llechwedd is one of Wales' top visitor attractions, where you can visit to experience life as a Victorian miner, you may also travel like the Victorians on the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway to Porthmadog. The area boasts a range of attractions for everyone.Newly added, Bounce Below , Zip World and amazing off road biking !

We have been so lucky to be able to use the brilliant Glass Fronted Art Deco styled Morannedd building right by the sea in Criccieth. Designed by architectural icon Clough Williams Ellis in the 1930s we hope we have brought this beautiful place back to life both internally and externally. It is a treat for us to work in such a place, looking out across the bay towards Harlech Castle and the Rhinogs or back along our own beach to Criccieth Castle. It is magical, coming to work is a joy and we do hope that visiting us will produce the same feelings and the food is brilliant!

Our lunch menu is fresh and as local as can be, serving local mussels ( in season ) welsh lamb ciabattas ,homemade fish cakes freshly filled baguettes and baked potatoes to more substantial homemade lasagne, Home baked ham with eggs, chefs Chicken Korma, homemade faggots over creamed mash and mint gravy. All can be served alfresco if the weather permits on our river terrace. During the afternoon our cream teas are proving to be a great success with home made bara brith, Victoria sponge, coffee and walnut and carrot cake being the favourites
