Food Scene

If you are looking for authentic Berlin food (no, not Dönner or Currywurst! The type of things my grandmother used to make) then this is the place to go. Everything on the menu is delicious.... don't be put off by the strange descriptions on the English menu (an example of why you should not use google translator). My personal favorite is the wild boar (Wildschwein) You need to make reservations well in advance. If you can't find a place there, try Julchen Hoppe just down the street. (Almost identical menu, same owner)

Everything Else

So most people go to the Bundestag, wait in line, go to the roof, and thats it. What you really need to do is take the historical tour in english. If you are even mildly interested in german history / history in general, this tour is amazing. There are several others, but this is the one to do. After the tour you still get to go up on the roof. This takes some preparation though. Normaly you need to book online at the Bundestag website at least 6 months in advance (have your passport info handy)..... less then that is possible but unlikley.

This is an awesome Spa / Sauna, and my favorite place to relax in the city..... many saunas, steambaths, and chill rooms. Outdoor and indoor pool and a restaurant... No matter how stressed I go in, I always come out completely relaxed. Just a heads up though, here in Germany we do this sort of thing naked and and with the men and women together. Bathing suits are not allowed. Yes, everybody is naked, but it is a completely nonsexual enviroment. (Any of that sort of thing is frowned upon and will get you kicked out) Well worth overcomming your inhibitions for.

Sightseeing

Berlin has two subtereanean worlds that few have seen. There is a maze of WW2 bunkers, and cold war bunkers. Both can only be accesed through a group called Berliner Unterwelten e.V. that conduct tours. There are many different tours, most of which you have to be over 18 for. The basic ones most tourists do are interesting and fairly easy. For the others you are spelunking (cave exploration....basically underground mountain climbing) and you have to have solid hiking shoes and be in good physical shape. You will get a good workout... not for the faint of heart or those with heart conditions. It's not like in the movies... things have collapsed and it's dark and dirty but really cool.

Charlottenburg Palace at 10 min walk away and is embedded in a beautiful garden. With its orangery, palace park and ancillary buildings, the former summer palace is now Berlin's largest palace complex. Over the course of history, it was rebuilt and expanded many times and thus reflects the development of contemporary taste in a compressed manner. Charlottenburg Palace was built between 1695 and 1699 based on designs by the architect J. Arnold Nering. It was initially intended as a small pleasure palace for Sophie Charlotte, wife of Elector Frederick III. After the Elector's was crowned first king of Prussia in 1701, the palace was expanded by the architect Eosander von Göthe into a more representative seat based on the Versailles model. The central middle building with its eleven window axes was supplemented by side wings and a court of honor. The most characteristic building element of the palace - its oversized dome - was also added during this phase. When Sophie Charlotte died in 1705, the palace as well as the nearby village were named in her honor. With the death of King Frederick I in 1713, construction was abandoned and continued only under Frederick the Great in 1740. Based on designs by the architect Knobelsdorff, who also designed the fampus Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam, a new wing in the east was built between 1740-46 as a counterpart to the older west wing with the Orangery. The palace theater was added as a final component in 1791 according to plans by Carl Gotthard Langhans. This extension of the Orangery marked the end of almost 100 years of construction. After Charlottenburg Palace was severely damaged in World War II, its restoration and rebuilding took over two decades. Current Use Today, Charlottenburg Palace can be visited as a museum. Two permanent exhibitions display a collection from the Hohenzollern silver chamber that includes over 600 gems, treasures and precious items. Visitors can also gain insight into the reign and history of the powerful Hohenzollern family. In the summer, visitors often lose track of time while strolling through the beautiful palace gardens. Each winter, a popular Christmas market takes place in front of the magnificent backdrop of Charlottenburg Palace.

Essentials

This is the closest Liedl to us, but Liedls are everywhere. This is the place to go if you are on a budget. Aldi and Netto are the only supermarkets that are cheaper, but in most of branches in the city, it feels like you need to take a shower when you leave.

So this a regular supermaket, not cheap, not overly expensive. If you want to save a bit, get their storebrand...... hard to miss, its called JA and from a quality standpoint is as good as the brand names.... most of the time (don't get the JA coffee)

Eurogidas are allover the city, but this is one of the closest oes to us. Basically, it is like a regular supermarket,if you are shopping for a middle eastern kitchen. They have amazing delicious things.... most important stop is the deli counter. It's like getting take out at a top quality Middle Eastern restaurant, at a fraction of the price. They also have very competitive meat prices.
