Cuba’s highest peak sits in the heart of the Gran Parque Nacional Sierra Maestra. The closest route for this summit hike, beginning at Las Cuevas on the southern coast of Santiago de Cuba province. You can plan your trip from Santiago to organize your (private) transport from there and have a few stopovers at some beaches along the way. You have to ascend 2,000 meters in 9.6km of trail in 4 to 6 hours and, if you don't continue to Alto del Naranjo, a 3 to 4 hours descend that same day. Going down can be a 'knee-breaker'. The Sierra Maestra is a National Park full of endemic animals, including the smallest toad in the world, millions of birds, giant ferns and wild orchids.

Crowned by a 63,000-ton boulder that perches like a grounded asteroid high above the Caribbean sea, la Gran Piedra forms part of Cuba's greenest and most biodiverse mountain range. Not only do the mountains have a refreshingly cool microclimate, they also exhibit a unique historical heritage based on the legacy of some 60 or more coffee plantations set up by French farmers in the latter part of the 18th century. On the run from a bloody slave rebellion in Haiti in 1791, enterprising Gallic immigrants moved to Cuba & turn it into the world's number-one coffee producer in the early 19th century. Their craft and ingenuity have been preserved for posterity in a Unesco World Heritage Site.

Cuba's highest point, Pico Turquino, at 1974 m. Although a considerable part of the Sierra Maestra mountains in Santiago. The panoramic views are awe-inspiring. Most people, especially those planning to trek further into the mountains, make the journey up the immensely steep ascent road to Alto del Naranjo in a sturdy jeep provided by Cubataxi or Ecotur.
