Port-Royal National Historic Site features a reconstruction of the Habitation, an enclosed wooden compound. In 1605, Samuel de Champlain helped establish one of the earliest European attempts at settlement in North America on land that is the traditional homeland of the Mi’kmaq. Costumed interpreters will help you understand the challenges faced by the French as they carved out a new settlement. Let your imagination soar as you walk along the shore of the Annapolis Basin, and gaze at the same horizon that the Mi’kmaq experienced for thousands of years and that Champlain saw in 1605.

Step foot onto one of the most hotly contested pieces of land on the entire continent which became Canada’s first administered National Historic Site in 1917 - Fort Anne. The land on which Fort Anne now stands is part of the traditional homeland of the Mi’kmaq. In recent centuries, a succession of Scottish, French, and English settlers clashed over this prize on the banks of Nova Scotia’s Annapolis River, often drawing the Mi’kmaq into their conflict. Fort Anne was the site of thirteen attacks, seven change of hands, and the ratification of the Treaty of Boston. Visitors can walk the earthen walls, explore the 1797 Officers’ Quarters Museum and soak up thousands of years of Canadian history

There are two short loop trails. Bohaker trail is 2.2 kms in length and offers a great view of a waterfall emptying into the Bay of Fundy. Adventurous people can use the old frayed rope to descend down to the ocean floor. You'll see the remains of a fishing boat, a sign of previous activity in the area. Overall the terrain of the trail is well maintained and shouldn't pose a problem. A few benches are sprinkled along the trail. Charlies trail is 1.9 kms in length. What makes this trail interesting as the site was once a freed black community. Evidence suggest that they settled along this section of coastline around the time of the American Revolution. This trail is still under development.

From Middleton, take Hwy 10 approximately 5.5 kms to Nictaux Falls. Look for the former rail line on the left of the highway. Length: approximately 20 kms and 4 to 6 hour duration. The most difficult portion of the hike comes at the beginning, as the trail climbs almost immediately, rising just over 70m for the first 4 kms. At several points, the trail skirts close to the edge of a cliff, so use caution, and keep dogs and children close. Once that portion is done, the trail broadens out and is fairly easy to the Alpena Rapids, which is the point at which you will turn and head back to the start.

Food Scene

In 1760, this beautiful part of the Annapolis Valley was known as Lunn's Mill, named after the major industry in the area: a bustling sawmill owned by John Lunn. Around this time, the Charming Molly set sail from New England carrying the first New England Planters. These intrepid people helped expand the community with farms and shops and in 1822 it was renamed Lawrencetown. Lunn's Mill has 10 rotating taps of local craft beer and cider. Most beer is brewed on site, but we also feature other great selections from around Nova Scotia. Try a sampler flight, grab a glass of your favourite, or take a growler home with you. We also offer a simple menu of eclectic entrees and shareable snacks.

Back in the early 1970’s, the Rogerson’s started a farm in the Annapolis Valley. They farmed traditional farm animals along with some interesting exotics. By 1975, school groups started coming to the farm for their school trips. In 1980, the “Learning to Live” program started at the farm, which involved kids from the local schools. This program provided the children with work experience involved with the care of animals. The popularity of the farm grew and grew and by 1984, they decided to open to the public. The animal varieties expanded as the farm became a zoo. Now more than 30 years later, the zoo continues to flourish.

Bear River is located six kilometres inland on a tidal river of the Bay of Fundy . The tide rises and falls approximately 25 feet twice a day due to the dramatic Fundy tides, the highest on earth! Bear River is home to many artisans from far & wide, drawn here by the beauty and uniqueness of the area. The original peoples of Bear River are the Mi’kmaq who lived here for thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans. We welcome you to visit our community, and to check out the shops and studios, visit our museum, and our vineyards, and perhaps consider, as many have, the possibility of living here.
