Food Scene

Do you love typical Bavarian cuisine, big meaty portions and beer? Görreshof is the place for you. Voted as one of the best Bavarian restaurants in Munich on Tripadvisor but almost free of tourists. If you're really hungry try Schweinehaxe, a huge roasted ham hock. Small terrace/beer garden in the backyard.

Parks & Nature

Our living room in summer weekends. Let it be picnic, sun bathing, soccer, frisbee, surfing, swimming or just reading a book, you will feel home here. Through the park flows Eisbach, an alpine river where you can surf and swim in summer. The water is chilly and the current is strong, but in hot days nothing beats dipping in Eisbach. The park has also two beer gardens (we recommend Seehaus over the Chinese Tower).

Fancy a morning run? Venue of the 1972 Olympic games is where we go running. On the man made hills (made of WW2 bombing ruins) you will have a great view over the city. On the hills you will also find a small beer garden with simple food and drinks. Olympia tower has a panorama restaurant, the parking lot hosts a flea market on summer Saturdays, and biggest international artists play their gigs in Olympiahalle or at the stadium.

Arts & Culture

The Munich Documentation Centre for the History of National Socialism is a must-visit for history geeks. The museum has been built on the site of the former ‚Brown House’, once the headquarters of the Nazi Party. The permanent exhibition documents the history of National Socialism in Munich, the city’s special role in the Nazi system of terror and Munich’s difficulties in confronting its past after 1945. It's quite text-driven but very informative.

Our favourite cocktail bar in the lively Glockenbach neighbourhood. On their website they say: "Our inspiration comes from classic American cocktail bars and southern style juke joints. Our ingredients are the finest spirits from Kentucky and Tennessee and the soulful voices of Etta James and Howlin Wolf. We have rhythm and we have blues – and we have beer as cold as your girlfriend’s heart." zumwolf.com/

Sightseeing

The Munich Residence served as the seat of government and residence of the Bavarian dukes, electors and kings from 1508 to 1918. What began in 1385 as a castle in the north-eastern corner of the city (the Neuveste, or new citadel), was transformed by the rulers over the centuries into a magnificent palace, its buildings and gardens extending further and further into the town. The rooms and art collections spanning a period that begins with the Renaissance, and extends via the early Baroque and Rococo epochs to Neoclassicism, bear witness to the discriminating taste and the political ambition of the Wittelsbach dynasty. http://www.residenz-muenchen.de/englisch/residenc/index.htm

Most tourists know Theresienwiese as the venue of Oktoberfest, but the large open space (size of 60 soccer fields) hosts various events throughout the year: Fleamarkets, Frühlingsfest (little sister of Oktoberfest in April-May), Vintage cars festivals and Christmas markets. The massive 19th-century Bavaria Statue is also worth a photo. It is a female personification of the Bavarian homeland, and by extension its strength and glory. An internal circular staircase leads up to a platform in the head, where four openings in the helmet provide a view of the Theresienwiese and downtown Munich.
