South Point: Worth the drive down if you're circling the island! It's 12 miles off the highway, down a single lane road. Some tourist traps/snacks/fruit stands. South Point is the southern most tip of the United States - awesome cliff views, photo ops. Is usually VERY windy, hold on to your hats. Keep away from the edge, it's a long drop down...DO NOT jump off the cliffs, extremely dangerous.....

This is just off the highway, and okay I haven't actually been inside there, but might be interesting. A bit expensive, around $45+ per person. Also on the same street is an Abalone Farm that gives tours for a small fee, as well as a small beach park with limited swimming, clean restrooms and a couple of picnic tables (very quiet little park) but can be very hot on sunny days.

This lookout is awe-inspiring and you can feel the mana (Hawaiian energy) there! Beautiful views of Waipio Valley and has information on this sacred sight. You can take an ATV tour down to the bottom, there are places on the way to book a trip down, or you can drive down if you have 4WD - trust me, you NEED 4WD as road is narrow, muddy, sometimes flooded....leads down to a pebble/stone beach. Please be respectful of the residents that live in this sacred valley. Parking can get sketchy, go early if possible.

Take the 4 mile scenic route, just 10 minutes north of Hilo and you'll end up at Onomea Bay. Gorgeous 4 mile drive, go slow and look for the waterfalls, pull over and take photo's. You'll pass a large opening (look for cars parked on the side of the road). Get out and walk down the path to see breathtaking views of this lovely bay. Botanical Gardens is on this road.

This is a beautiful botanical garden just up the road from Onomea Bay on the 4 mile scenic route. Believe it's about $10 per person. Can be difficult to walk, has steep hills but nice paved pathways with hand rails. Not recommended for wheelchairs. Once you get down the hill, the walking is not bad from there on out. Be sure to go all the way to the bottom as it opens up to Onomea Bay, great photo spots! Go even if it's raining, it's still beautiful and I believe they loan you umbrella's or you can rent one. Has a small gift shop.

This is one of the prettiest beaches on the Kona Side, but kind of hidden. Take the Hapuna Beach exit off the highway, but turn left before you get to the parking lot for Hapuna. Follow single lane road for about 1/2 mile. This beach is shady, has a couple picnic tables, white sand, and gorgeous water. LESS crowds than Hapuna beach and no entrance fee. Has outdoor shower and clean restrooms. Hapuna is over hyped, NO SHADE, and so crowded.....Plus they make you pay $5 to park there. Skip Hapuna and try Waialea Bay (also known as 69 Beach). This is a beautiful park and very educational. Set right on the beach, it's gorgeous. Park entrance fee required, but worth it to see a historical spot of Hawaiian significance. Pack a lunch...if you take the left before the park entrance there is a beautiful park with lots of picnic tables that face out to the ocean, very quiet and usually not crowded. Most beautiful beach in Hilo! Clear turquoise water, white sandy bottom and easy metal steps to get in. Best place to swim with the turtles (just try not to touch them) Snorkeling is pretty good and it has a small shallow reef, so perfect for beginners or children. This is a great spot to stop if you're down on Banyan Drive by the Queen's Park and Coconut Island. They make great fresh fruit Paleta Popsicles! It's in the Alii Ice company, on the inside circle of the park, kind of hidden. Look for the "We Cool" sign on top. They have a little ice cream shop inside, or take your island pop's and sit down by the water. $1.50 each!

CLOSED DUE TO PANDEMIC. This is a great place to take the kids on a rainy day. It's right downtown Hilo, lots of parking, and it's FREE! It's an interactive discovery center for kids. Lots of hands on stuff for kids to do, large aquarium, and clean restrooms. It's not very big, but the kids will love it. About a 30 minute adventure.

This is interesting if you are interested in Tsunami's. Entrance fee is a bit steep, like $12. It's very small but they have a nice 30 minute video, lots of photo's and information on Tsunami's. Don't recommend this for families as the kids will be bored stiff....

Really interesting little museum about the Lymans who were missionaries in the early 1830's. Original wood house, first wood house on the Hawaiian islands, is there and can be toured. Has original Koa floors, furniture, and tour is informative. Entrance fee is $10 or $12 - great rainy day activity.
