Food Scene

This is a pizza place that I mostly use for take out. It's very close to the house and you can order online and schedule pick up in as little as 20 minutes from time of order. Ledo has been a local fixture for as long as I can remember. I think it started in/around College Park, catering to the college crowd. (The University of Maryland, with its student body of 38K, is just a few miles to the north of Cheverly.) Ledo makes a square pie very interesting, crisp crust. I like their basil and pesto-based toppings.

Belga is in DC, but it's the place we have been to most often. Theater friends turned us on to Belga, which is just a few blocks from the Capital Hill Arts Workshop.

This really cool chain (you will also find a restaurant in Brookland over by Catholic University, also 20 minutes from Cheverly by car) honors author and poet, Langston Hughes, who also spent some time working in food service as a busboy. I love the menu at BB&P. You can easily eat plant-based here if that's your desire. It's comfy, with sofas etc., not just tables. Serves alcohol.

Franklins has been a fixture on Route 1 in Hyattsville for as long as I can remember, so I'm checking the Airbnb-suggested "historic" box. It has moved with the times and fits well with the new, "town center" feel of business Hyattsville. It has a general store attached, which I love to browse in.

On the DC Metro Orange Line, it also gets you easy access to the MARC train system (regional, Maryland and DC) as well as Amtrak. If you are staying at our place and taking the train to DC, it's possible to skip Union Station and come via New Carrollton. Also a good option if you fly in to BWI, where you can take the MARC train to New Carrollton and then hop the Orange Line to Cheverly.

Shopping

Dakota Crossing in NE DC is actually the closest shopping to Cheverly these days! It is not quite finished, but new shops are opening every day. Off the top of my head, there's a Dick's, Lowe's, PetSmart, and Costco. Maybe not interesting on vacation, but living here, I am delighted to have these chains all so close now.

This Whole Foods is near the University of Maryland in College Park. It generally takes about 15 minutes to get there by car. It's a great place to shop for fresh, whole foods, organic, as well as plant-based. For some folks, it may provide respite from eating out and the lack of control of one's diet that brings with it! You have a fridge and separate freezer in the BnB.

Wegman's is a delightful place! It has great prices on regular groceries as well as a huge selection of partially prepared foods (e.g. cut up veggies, ready-to-cook kits). In addition it has a cafe where you might want to grab a bite to eat even if you aren't at Wegman's to buy groceries. Oh, and it has a model train that circulates on a track overhead. Nice, fun touch,

Entertainment & Activities

Check out CHAW's calendar for performances while you are in town. Not expensive, intimate live theater atmosphere. We like it.

Parks & Nature

Walk or bike along the Anacostia in historic Bladensburg, stop and read the information boards about War of 1812 events near the site. You can also rent canoes, kayaks (and bikes) and, depending on your timing, watch the crew teams that practice based at Bladensburg.

The blue dot marks one of the entrances to the Lower Beaverdam Creek Trail and is within easy walking distance of our house. The Friends of Beaverdam Creek have been faithfully working every third Saturday morning for many years to develop the trail for community enjoyment, spreading woodchips, defining boundaries, and removing invasive species. The trail runs between the Magruder Spring marker at the lower end of Cheverly Avenue, up and down hills (moderate trail in that sense) and ends at Cheverly Town Park.

The red dot marks Magruder Spring Park location of Magruder Spring, also known as Cheverly Spring. These springs were used by the British in 1814 as they marched on Washington. Both Magruder Spring and Crawford's Adventure Spring were designated in 1980 as Prince George's County Historic Resources. This park leads into the Lower Beaverdam Creek Trail, described here as "Cheverly Circle." The mapping feature here on AirBnB won't let me enter just any title, so I hope people looking for parks will get so far as to read the descriptions! Cheverly Avenue & Arbor Street

This is CVS. It's in the same little shopping center as Ledo's (pizza). It's not (easy, pleasant) walking distance, but the closest pharmacy. Turn left on Kilmer street to enter. Landover Road is busy.

This is Bruce Cleaners. The business has been in Cheverly for many years, and they have great ratings (See Yelp etc.) I don't use them much (wash-and-wear person) but when I do, they are great - fast, reasonable.

ALDI is our local grocery store. It has good prices and is good for essentials. If you are familiar with the chain, however, you know you get what they have. If you are looking for something very specific -- I went there for blueberries the other day -- you may be disappointed, as I was. Look at my recommendations in the SHOPPING section for stores with a wider selection, but a bit farther from the house.
