Food Scene

KicsiZso operates a three minute walk from the Buda waterfront of Margit híd (Margaret Bridge) with Hungarian flavors and treats straight from producers. It’s a great place to start the day where, by the way, they also have a tasty lunch menu. They have egg-based meals beyond scrambled eggs, like Croque monsieur and madame, but they also rethought what a sandwich means: we can have shrimp, avocado and egg filled bagels, or served as French toast, focaccia, and filled croissants. We can pair these up with a cup of dark roast Bagira Coffee or a cordial, and we shouldn’t forget about the pestos and jams either.

This charming Buda eatery opened amid summertime on Margit Street, close to the panoramic tomb of Gül Baba, providing a perfect hideaway for all-day relaxation. We thought long and hard about what title would fit Törökméz best, and we finally realized that “living space” is the most accurate phrase for describing what the eatery is all about: breakfast all day, sparkling elderflower wine, rare vintages, delicatessen products, French baked goods, and fantastic coffee. It’s virtually impossible to resist the urge to lounge for awhile on the leafy terrace.

Healthy cakes, fresh salads, coffee specialties, juices, cookies, and more all await people in Buda who want to try something novel and nutritious. We visit the most health-conscious confectionery of Fény Street Market, Mahalo – meaning “thank you” in Hawaiian. We like to visit places that are honest, free of clichés, and do not over-explain their goods or wares. In the case of Mahalo, which we recently visited amid the motley shops of Fény Street Market near Széll Kálmán Square, the proprietors of this small eatery could have bombarded us with reasons why paleo, vegan, or raw diets are good, or why processed foods are bad for our health.

Budai Kettő in Varsányi Irén Street quickly became the neighborhood’s favored spot for starting the day: the service is friendly, they open early, and their selection keeps expanding. This means that it’s a great place for coffee and a bite that we can either enjoy on the small terrace given that the weather is good, or inside when it’s cold outside. Their desserts are superb, just like the pastries, and they have various sandwiches which we can ask to be grilled, too. A nicely decorated light or dark roast coffee goes well with these, but their syrups and dessert pots are also worth a visit.

Blueberry, red-current, sour cherry, raspberry, ginger, and cinnamon are all the favorite flavors of syrup consumers and they are available in the Kantin! However; you can only choose from four tastes a day, in order to preserve the diversity and it is quite rare that you can meet with the same tastes two days following. The syrups in MóKa do not contain any preservative or artificial coloring and most of them are from Fertőd Drink Szörpüzem. Sour cherry, blackberry, raspberry, elder, and jaffa tastes are available; the latter one is especially for the retro feeling. Their specialty is the lavender syrup from the Kerekedi Levendula Présház, which is perfect for a lavender spritzer.

MiniZso Bagel has everything its big brother in Frankel Leó Road has: sandwiches that are a step beyond simple due to some shrimps or smoked duck breast in bagels complete with light roast Bagira Coffee, desserts, biscuits, croissants, sweet pastries similar to cinnamon buns, and freshly pressed fruit juices. As bagels have the leading role here, we can choose from among 7 permanent, and one weekly offer – this is how we can enjoy the complete package of a Zsolt Horváth-style breakfast amid the peaceful milieu of Hattyú Street.

Entertainment & Activities

The thermal and curative waters at the foot of József Hill have been known and utilized for centuries. Thanks to the Brothers Hospitallers of St. John of God, the wondrous bath, Veli Bej, hidden here since the Ottoman times, has been opened once again to the public. Due to the temporary trial service one can enter at a lower price than that of the neighboring Lukács or the popular Rudas through the Frankel Leó Street entrance of the Irgalmasrendi Kórház. This adventurous start turns many a visitor off, and so the bath capable of accomodating 80 people is visited by only some in the morning (9 AM – 12 PM), and the afternoon (3 PM – 9 PM) has yet to see a full house, too.

Parks & Nature

Szemlő-hegyi Cave hides in the hillside above Kolosy Square, not far from Daubner Confectionery. The succulents, pisolite and gypsum crystals are regarded rather special, since these support the thermal water origin of the cave. Thanks to the air’s nearly 100% humidity and 12-Celsius degree, there are speleotherapy sessions held in the tunnels since 1990. The entrance area is now surrounded by a buffer zone, where hikers can enjoy slides, a jungle gym, benches and a geological study trail. The cave, renewed and party made accessible for disabled people in 2011, can be visited only within the frameworks of the hourly tours. Visitors can try the rope technique.

Shopping

The Fény Street Market (Fény utcai piac) is the most popular market of the Buda-side of town, which is partly owing to the fact that it is in the immediate vicinity of the “Moszkva tér” (Széll Kálmán Square). The secret? In Budapest, it has probably the largest selection of organic and protected origin goods. This is not only fashionable, but also creates standards to follow. Perhaps it is not the cheapest market in town, but the prices are still reasonable for pensioners to shop here, which is reassuring.
