Food Scene

The Pantry is known for Czech and German cuisine and street food, as well as really tasty cocktails. All of this magic is served up inside a historic American Foursquare home that has been converted into a bar/restaurant in the charming Hillcrest Historic District. The "truffled deviled eggs", charcuterie, and pommes frites are terrific appetizers, and the schnitzel and lasagna are to die for. For vegans and vegetarians, they have a special menu, with terrific "vegetable lesco" which is a sizzling skillet of potato and tomato and blackened onion heaven. They tend to be open later than most restaurants, and they also offer an outdoor patio that is always a treat to visit.

If you fancy some simple dumplings, noodles, or soup, this place is within walking distance and has a fun atmosphere. Located on Main St., this sleek shop offers pork, chicken, or tofu varieties of simple (and delicious) fare. I recommend any noodle bowl with a side of carrot slaw and some sesame balls for dessert. The non-meat options are vegan.

If you want to have an authentic experience of Little Rock's local food scene and community, then this is the place that you want to go for breakfast or lunch. (They also do dinner, but I've always preferred the daytime menus.). The Root Cafe's (known only as "The Root" to locals) has a mission to "build community through local food." They do this by sourcing ingredients from hundreds of small Arkansas farms. The menu (of "hippie food") includes everything from burgers and salads and soups to great vegetarian and vegan options. For a weekday breakfast or lazy weekend brunch, this is THE place to be. They do brunch all day on Sunday (9-2) but they are CLOSED on Monday.

Step back in time with some great Southern Hospitality in a historic hotel bar. The service is impeccable, and while the atmosphere is "fancy," the dress-code is "come as you are." There is sometimes a jazz ensemble playing in the corner, and the menu has many southern favorites. I recommend asking for the complimentary "fried blackeyed peas" as a table snack, and the appetizer of special-recipe Pimento cheese on house-made soda crackers is TO DIE FOR. Gumbos, salads, fancy meats, sandwiches, and charcuterie for all. The cocktails are STELLAR. Especially the "debutante." The mint-julep is a solid choice for first-time visitors. A little pricey but great late at night.

This family-owned Brazilian restaurant is a little pricey and modestly decorated, but the FOOD (oh the glorious food) is delicious. It's great for lunch or dinner, though I prefer it for lunch. They have a smoky iced tea, and one of the most generous menus in town for those with dietary restrictions (vegan? gluten free? you're set.). My favorite dish is the basic beans and rice with collards and tomatoes. And the PAO DE QUIEJO --- cheesy yucca flour rolls that are like little puffs of cheese heaven as an appetizer. The chicken hearts of palm soup is usually a staple, and it is a TREAT. When you are done, you can step next door for a sweet from their bakery, "Rosalia's Bakery".

Ever heard of "Tex-Mex"? Here's your chance to try "Ark-Mex"! Choose to make a "Salsa Trio" or get their famous yellow cheese dip, a food-type "invented" in Arkansas. (True story!). Tamales, enchiladas, and tacos galore. My favorite dishes are (for meat eaters) the southern-fried chicken and pickle tacos, the chicken verde enchiladas, and (for vegans and veggies) the veggie fajitas. The smoky pinto beans are divine, and their "Spring Fling," a frozen mojito, is delightful in all seasons of the year. The downside of this place: It is LOUD, but if you can snag a spot on the front bar-patio, it offers a front-row seat to some great dog-walking in "the Heights."

South on Main is a real staple of the SoMa area, which includes Main St. just south of the interstate. Their affiliation with the Oxford American, our Southern Literary magazine, means that there is GREAT music there many nights of the week, though many events require advance tickets or potentially-steep door cover charges. The cocktails are creative and the atmosphere is brilliant.....a great date night. Their menu is inventive and will transport you straight to the heart of the South, but in a very chic way. This place is always a hit with visitors, with its unique decor and velvety red stage curtains and aura of magic. You'll dig it. They also do LUNCH!

This place is truly at the heart of Little Rock's community, offering a fun and family-friendly space that just might be the most diverse crowd in Little Rock at any one moment in time. They have 5 or 6 flavors of "serve yourself" coffee, and many glass cases filled with cakes, cookies, cupcakes, breads, bagels, etc. I recommend the "pecan squares," iced sugar cookies, and Asiago bagels with veggie cream cheese.

DELICIOUS gourmet burgers, shakes, salads, and cocktails. Best salad: Thai chop salad (with steak) or Chicken salad. Best burger: ANY of them. I like the "mushroom melt" or the falafel burger. To drink? If you like boozy frozen concoctions, you cannot go wrong with their "Velvet Orange," which is like a frozen push-up pop that will get you tipsy. Their cocktails are top-notch, and the atmosphere is fun for guests of all ages. It is very common to see families with small children relaxing here with smiling adults with cocktails and giggling children with milkshakes.

If you love Indian Food, go visit Sami, long-time owner of Star of India. He will say, "See you tomorrow!" as you leave, and you will truly consider coming back, because the food is SO SO SO GOOD. I have not yet had any item on the menu that wasn't delicious, but my favorites are the Paneer Makhani and the Lentil Soup, with Garlic Naan. The atmosphere is a little dated and it is inside a strip mall, but the dark lighting, cocktails, and traditional music transport you straight to Indian bliss.

This is the best pizza within walking distance of the Mills-Davis House. Their garlic twists are tasty, and they have squeeze bottles of ranch dressing, which is something that many Arkansans love with their pizza. They sell pizza by the slice, and also sandwiches and salads.

If you came to Arkansas to eat barbecue, then this is one of the two spots you'll have to try. (the other being Sim's BBQ). Whole Hog is award-winning and filled with trophies all over the walls from various competitions. Their barbecue is smoky and served dry, giving you 6 sauces to choose from at your table. The potato salad is based on ranch and bacon. Great for lunch or early dinner. Their competitor, Sim's, is a more authentic staple, with pre-sauced barbecue that comes with wonder bread and slaw.

This is my favorite pizza in Little Rock. The crust is crispy and fragranced with beer, and the interior of the space feels like a dive bar, while the patio offers pleasant outdoor spillover seating. Vino's is an INSTITUTION here in Little Rock, with a fantastic dirty and unkept vibe. It is a pizza parlor, a brewery, a music venue, and one of the few places to buy beer on Sunday. In the spirit of full disclosure, their pizza is fairly terrible. However, if you want to get a sense of one of the best-loved local music venues of the last 30 years, this is it. They sell pizza by the slice that is "ok" and whole pizzas which are infinitely better, but still not amazing. This is a place you go to enjoy the local vibe. They have a great two story patio on the back, and all-ages music shows.

This is best described as a large open-air FOOD HALL, with many small eateries in the perimeter, and shared seating at the center. In the summer months, there is a large farmers market outside on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The food offerings are fairly international in flavor, with Nepalese dumplings, Indian, Mediterranean, Thai, and a burger joint. This is good for lunch (not open on evenings) on days when everybody in your family is picky and wants to be able to order whatever floats their boat.

Sightseeing

Any first-time visitor to Little Rock should make sure that they carve out time to visit the Central High School visitor's center. This national park (that encompasses a functional high school) marks the site of our city's 1957 desegregation crisis, which became a national touchstone in the ongoing discussion about civil rights in the United States. Visiting takes as little or as long as you'd want it to, and the school building itself is stunning to behold. It is nestled within a diverse and interesting historic neighborhood.

If you have a romantic bone in your body, and/or if you do have adventurous children with you on this trip, take the time to go to North Little Rock to see the "Old Mill," a fake Grist Mill built for the opening credits of "Gone with the Wind." The grounds have beautiful gardens, and the mill has so many places for great photo opportunities. There are dramatic bridges made of faux bois (fake wood) sculpted out of concrete, and you'll also get to see a local "kissing spot" inside of a small bench on one of the bridges, where hundreds of pieces of gum are signs of the tradition of romance.

Drinks & Nightlife

Come see why Esquire magazine named the White Water Tavern as one of the top 25 bars in America. This place is THE REAL DEAL. It is our local beloved dive bar, with live music nearly every night of the week, and with a crowd from 21 to 101. The jukebox is killer. The pool table upstairs is lots of fun, if you can tear yourself away from the music.... and the fact that it is located next to the railroad tracks only makes one love it all the more. Many musicians claim that it is their favorite venue to perform in. It is one of my favorite late-night spots. They also music shows on Sunday evenings around 6 or 6:30 that are "family oriented" for those with youngsters.

Little Rock's most commercially-successful brewery has many tasty beers and a terrific menu. My favorite appetizer is the sorghum and black pepper pecans. On Thursdays they do racks of rib that people go nuts over (I'm vegan though, so I don't know much about it.). Their turkey reuben is killer, and everything they sell is some of the best bar food in town. Their taproom is large and the seating is all "family style," meaning that you don't get your own table, but rather your own "area" at very long wooden tables that are shared with others. It is within walking distance, just by walking east down 6th St. They do brunch on the weekends.

Venture across the river to one of the best breweries in Argenta. Their trademark "Bluewing Berry Wheat" is one of my favorites, and it is like a blueberry beer. They've got some great IPAs and stouts, and their duck nachos (don't knock 'em till you try them) are delicious.

Though I do not personally go here often, this is a beer lover's emporium, offering a dizzying list of beers, many of which are on tap. The atmosphere is cozy, attractive, and fun, especially when the front garage-bay windows are open in nice weather. After you officially taste all 200 beers, you can get your own "flying saucer" with your name on it on the ceiling.

Parks & Nature

Come take in the views of the Arkansas River and nearby Pinnacle Mountain on the world's longest purpose-built pedestrian bridge. It might be windy, but the view is spectacular, and it is a fun activity whether you are on foot or on bike. You'll see families, athletes, and lots of cute dogs being walked. On the north shore is "Cook's Landing" a great place to get lost in the woods, with dirt trails that offer shade, and a lengthy paved trail that is part of the "River Trail" that affords a view of the river.

MacArthur Park is very near to the Mills-Davis House, and its grounds include the Arkansas Arts Center (an Art Museum) as well as the MacArthur Park Museum of Military History. There are ponds, mean swans (seriously.....don't get too close), and a gated dog park. You'll see joggers, dog walkers, picnickers, and even people fishing in the ponds.

Arts & Culture

This is one of my favorite museums in Little Rock. Admission to the main museum is free, and living history tours are modestly priced. Come see paintings, silver, furniture, and other native arts, including a large permanent exhibition devoted to the Native American tribes who were among Arkansas's first residents. The grounds offer preserved buildings from the state's territorial days. They frequently have events for children and families, and on the 2nd Friday of each month from 5 to 8 they have free libations and live music.

Visit Little Rock's main art museum, which has a terrific permanent collection and a world-class collection of works on paper. The museum is located just a few blocks to the South in MacArthur Park. Admission to the permanent collection is free, but some traveling exhibitions require an admission fee. Art lovers will be in heaven, and those who don't love art might discover that maybe they do.

Come to the only purse museum in the world, which tells the story of women's history through a woman's purse and its contents. This terrific museum has a gift shop that is DANGEROUS. Ha!

This is one of the top tourist attractions, and it is easy to see why. The views from the building are great, and the exhibitions (Both permanent ones and traveling ones) are usually terrific. If you are fans of the Clintons (and perhaps even if you aren't) you'll probably enjoy a stop at this site. This is probably best for children over 8 or 10, as there are few activities or exhibitions that would hold the attention of a younger child.

Entertainment & Activities

Want to go BOWLING in a retro bowling alley while you sip COCKTAILS and fancy rum punch from a crystal punch bowl? Look no further. This place is FUNNNNNNNN. It can be difficult to get a lane without reservations on a Friday or Saturday, but weeknights tend to be more flexible. Lanes are rented by the hour, which means that you have to be willing to cut a game short if somebody is waiting for their time slot and you aren't quite finished yet. It is right around the corner from the Mills-Davis House.

This place is an hour outside of Little Rock, but if you enjoy a day at the races, then this might be for you. They are famous for 50 cent corned beef sandwiches on certain race days, and it can be fun to sit outdoors on a beautiful day to see the horses run, even if you don't place any bets. Kids usually love it.

Heifer Village is great for adults and children alike, with a museum exhibition, urban farm, and home base of Heifer International, a charity that addresses world hunger through animal husbandry. Admission is free, and the grounds and exhibitions are beautiful. Visitors learn about animals and life in other countries where there is not ready-access to clean drinking water or shelter. Their gift store and cafe are also enjoyable.

The Bark Bar is a watering hole for both humans and dogs, making it a fun spot if you are missing your own four-legged friend. They have dog-themed cocktails and drinks, and a menu of (you guessed it....hot dogs). This place is fun to see, even if you only walk past it and admire the dogs.

One of the best things to do in Little Rock is to hit one of the many open bike trails that are part of the "River Trail." Bobby's Bike Hike has friendly staff and reasonable prices, and their bikes are well-maintained. If you are here in fall or spring, there is just no excuse for not doing this.
