So why is it called the magic road? Well, here's where it gets really interesting, and we do believe that this will surprise you! As you drive along, at a particular point in the road (which is well marked), stop the car and turn the engine off. Put the car into neutral gear and gently release the handbrakes, take your foot off the brake pedal and...abracadabra, hey presto - your car will roll UP the hill. How does it happen? It's a bit of special Waterford magic.

Much loved by the people of Waterford and Tramore, the Guillmene is a sheltered cove with deep and clear water which is perfect for swimming. There is good access into the water via ladders and a slipway. Swimmers are advised to keep an eye on the tides and diving is not recommended. There is a large car park and basic toilets. A couple of seats and picnic tables overlook Newtown Cove and there is wheelchair access via a path through the Newtown woods. Awarded the Green Coast Award for 2014.

St Mary's Abbey, Glencairn is the only Cistercian monastery for women in Ireland. The monastery is located in the Blackwater Valley, about 3 miles upstream from Lismore. Here the community of nuns follow a life of prayer, solitude and simplicity. St Mary's Abbey, Glencairn is the first Cistercian monastery for women in Ireland since the Reformation, founded in 1932 by Holy Cross Abbey, Stapehill, England. Although in private ownership prior to our foundation, our monastery property once formed a portion of the episcopal lands held by the Celtic monks of Lismore. It was here in Lismore that St Malachy received his monastic formation.

Ballysaggartmore Towers are a truly magical sight. 'The Towers' is located 3 miles outside of Lismore Town. They were built in 1850 by Arthur Kiely-Ussher for his wife who wanted to live in a large house. The plan was to build a large house but having built the bridge, its towers and the gate lodge; the money ran out so work on the castle never began. Instead the family had to settle for a much more modest house which was demolished in the 1930s. Take the route R666 from Lismore to Ballyduff and Fermoy, sign-posted at the bridge near Lismore Castle. Continue for approximately 3.5km to the Towers entrance on the right. Ample parking is provided.

Dromana Gate is a Hindu Gothic gate dating from around 1830, 5km south of Cappoquin the only one of its kind in Ireland. The gate was originally built from wood and papier mache to greet the owner of the Dromana Estate, Henry Villiers-Stuart and his wife, Theresa Pauline Ott of Vienna, on returning from their honeymoon in 1826. The couple were so enchanted with the gate it was reconstructed in stone in later years. The gate structure was restored by the Irish Georgian Society in the 1960s and again by the Waterford County Council in 1990. The bridge over the Finisk River was replaced in 1971. The gate forms the entrance to Dromana Drive and House and Gardens which are open to the public.

THE HAT OF KING HENRY VIII The only piece of clothing left to survive anywhere in the world that belonged to King Henry VIII (he of the six wives!). This hat, along with a magnificent bearing sword, was a gift to the Mayor of Waterford from King Henry VIII in 1536. Made of red velvet from Lucca in Italy, the hat is embroidered with a Tudor rose on the top and daisies on the brim and was probably made at the royal court. King Henry VII was the first Tudor monarch to rule as King of England and Lord of Ireland. He came to the throne following a long period of political turmoil and civil war known as the Wars of the Roses.
