In-town Parks/Hikes
Forest Park is probably our favorite place in all of Portland. When we had a dog we'd hike here nearly every weekend, no matter the season. Tranquil, sparsely populated trails through beautiful forests. A 20-minute drive away. Our favorite loops start from the Springville Road trailhead and the BPA Road trailhead. Feel free to ask for a recommendation.

A hidden gem in North Portland. Beautifully landscaped rose garden with lots of benches and a big water feature. Great place for people watching and an evening stroll in good weather.

Day hikes
** CLOSED THRU 2023 DUE TO MUDSLIDE ** The road is closed from a mudslide, so you can get here only by a long hike from the Hummocks Trail trailhead via the Boundary Trail. Hummocks to Boundary is a good hike, or Coldwater Lake, or look for hikes on the south side of the mountain.
We love hiking on Mt. St. Helens, and this is the place to go if you've never visited the mountain. You can look right into the crater formed by the 1980 explosion, check out the visitors center there and others a long the way, and do a 4-hour roundtrip hike from here to Harry's Ridge for an even more spectacular view. Another option, especially Oct-April when the gate to the top is closed, is accessible by parking across from Coldwater Lake, the Hummocks Trail, which you can take to Boundary Trail and hike as long as you want (or until you hit snow) toward Johnston Ridge.

Admittedly, this is a far drive for a hiking trail: three hours! It is worth it, but if you're new to Mt. St. Helens, the north side (Johnston Ridge, 2 hrs) is probably what you want.

Our favorite hike in Ecola State Park. A close second is if you go the other way from the same parking-lot trailhead, to Indian Beach. Combine it with a trip to Cannon Beach and Haystack Rock.

Beautiful stretch of beach with great picnic spots and some hiking. Adjacent Netarts Bay is really pretty. About the same driving distance from Portland as Cannon Beach but quieter and less developed.
