I've never been here before - I don't eat chicharrón, but it's always full and everyone raves about it. Chicharrón is like pork rinds or crispy pork skins. Definitely not kosher.

This is a secret spot that you'd never even think to go in...and if you're not West African, you'll raise some eyebrows, and maybe even turn some heads, but this place serves very reasonably priced and good quality West African food with Ghanian emphasis I believe. This place is dark and hidden but beats hands down the New York Times reviewed bright and glitzy Papaye on Grand Concourse (I'd personally avoid eating there). Best dish is the fufu with fish. Be prepared to eat with your hands :-).

The one and only problem with Liberato is the prices - it's a little too expensive to go on a regular basis. However, it's a true experience, with a large to-go section in the front and a snug bar and sit-down section in the back. They have a huge menu and do everything from desserts to coffee to take out to every type of Dominican food known. And all the food ranges from "satisfactory" to "very good". It might seem hectic at first if you're not used to the environment, but trust me, worth the wait. Open late with a decent bar as well.

Here's how you know you're in the Bronx - the closest Indian restaurant PERIOD is all the way in the South Bronx (not too far from Yankee Stadium, the BxMA, and Bronx Court House), but per chance, it's also actually very good Indian food that also serves meat. The spices are on point and the prices are pretty good.

It irks me that "pizzeria" isn't it's own category on AirBNB. So Full Moon is not a "restaurant", it's a Pizzeria. While in my neighborhood there are dozens of little "pizzerias", I'd say they mostly fall into the "dollar pizza" category. If you're like me, all pizza is good pizza, but if you want a true quality pie, this is probably the closest place to get one (feel free to prove me wrong - I'd love to know a better pizza place closer!).

It's the closest Euro-style café we have. Good coffee options, great ambiance, plenty of seating both indoors and outdoors (in the spring and summer). Great place to study or read. Don't come here if you want to have a secret conversation in Albanian.

Has the look/feel of a true Caribbean 'chinchorro' (dive bar), and has surprisingly good food. Be sure to ask what's NOT on the menu! Also a hang out to play pool/domino and drink cheap beer. Very low key, familial environment.

Totally typical loud and boisterous Dominican bar. During the day it's just kind of a "restaurant" but at night it's a happening spot with scantily clad women with booming Bachata and Merengue and "cubetazos" (buckets of beer). Although I walk by it all the time, I actually have to thank my former AirBNB guests who went and had a good time and told me all about it.

Very loud Dominican nightclub that gets very crowded on the weekends. You'll hear the deafening Música Urbana, Bachata, Salsa, & Merengue from a block or two away. If you're there on a weekend around 4 or 5 in the morning you're guaranteed to see the cops with a woman in 3 inch heals and teary mascara crying cuz her boyfriend got into a fight with some other girl's boyfriend (or cuz she got into a fight with someone's boyfriend). If you like to dance, you'll have a blast here.

Sightseeing

The iconic Arthur Avenue which is also known as Bronx Little Italy. Although it's touristy, there are still a lot of very authentic Italian restaurants with a growing number of Albanian/Balkan restaurants on the southern end of the street. Too many restaurants to name and budget options range from $ to $$$$. You're better off using Yelp/Google or going and looking at the menus (and wait times). The old adage holds true here: The most popular restaurants tend to have mediocre food for expensive prices. But there are really good options at all levels. There are also several good places off of Arthur Avenue and on neighboring streets, so be sure to walk around.

The 24 hour fitness chain. If you're already a member, here you go. If not, the benefit is that it's 24 hours (hence the name). In my opinion, short-term contracts at this gym are expensive but if you're a serious gym bunny, then this gym is probably the best gym within walking distance. This will probably be the best option for the St. Barnabas medical students since it's very close to the hospital and also open at all the weird hours that residents/students aren't working.
