Knappogue Castle is a beautifully restored 15th century castle in the rolling hills of County Clare. When you visit, make sure you take a stroll through the lovely walled garden. The castle includes a furnished drawing room, dining room, chapel, great hall and a banquet hall that features medieval dinners. The castle was built by Sean MacCon MacNamara in 1467 as a defense against the invading Normans. The original tower design was popular with Irish and Anglo-Irish gentry. The castle was owned by MacNamaras until it was taken by Crowmell in 1659 and granted to Arthur Smith, a "Roundhead." In 1670, the Monarchy was restored and the castle was returned to the MacNamaras.

The Burren National Park is located in the southeastern corner of the Burren and is approximately 1500 hectares in size. The Park land was bought by the Government for nature conservation and public access. It contains examples of the major habitats within the Burren: Limestone Pavement, Calcareous Grassland, Hazel scrub, Ash/Hazel Woodland, Turloughs, Lakes, Petrifying Springs, Cliffs and Fen. The word "Burren" comes from an Irish word "Boíreann" meaning a rocky place. This is an extremely appropriate name when you consider the lack of soil cover and the extent of exposed Limestone Pavement. However it has been referred to in the past as "Fertile rock" due to the mixture of Herb & Flora

ONE OF THE OLDEST CAVES IN IRELAND Located in the heart of the Burren In County Clare. Forty minutes from both Galway and Shannon. Perched high on its Burren terraced mountain side with what has to be one of the most spectacular views of Galway Bay. Let the staff at AILLWEE welcome you to the dramatic underworld of the Burren area. Expert guides will accompany and inform you during your leisurely tour. The tour consists of a 30 minute stroll through the beautiful caverns – over bridged chasms, under weird formations and alongside the thunderous waterfall which sometimes gently sprays the unsuspecting visitor! Marvel at the frozen waterfall and explore the now extinct brown bears bones.

The Formation of Doolin Cave Limestone is predominantly calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and this is soluble in water that contains carbon dioxide (CO2). There has been much publicity about carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and its role in global warming but there is much more CO2 in the soil. Initially water moves through the rock very slowly along tiny passages but as it does so it dissolves the rock and gradually enlarges the passages to form discrete conduits. When these conduits become large enough for people to pass through they are referred to as caves. Active caves, like Pol an Ionáin, Doolin Cave, have a stream flowing through them which continues to dissolve the limestone.
