Food Scene

This very old hotel, the original 'Bandarini Hotel,' although renovated approximately 10 years ago, still looks a little run down. However, if you like Indian food, this is the best restaurant in Tanga. The seafood dishes are amazing and the price is low compared to anywhere else in Tanzania. Located opposite the Forodhani Gardens of Tanga, a cool place to hang out, observe the quiet pace of Tanga City go by, and savour some excellent dishes and cold beers. Opens at 19.00 hrs for dinner and has a bar that is open throughout the day. NOTE: like just about any restaurant in Tanga, the waiting time for a meal can be from a minimum of 30 minutes or more.

This old Yacht Club was built in the mid 20th century and in its heyday was the yachting playground for Tanga residents. Many a sailing regattas were sailed here until about 10 years ago, and old photos and winner's boards tell of a bygone era. All that remains of that era are a couple of grumpy old men that are not always welcoming to strangers. Having said that, the Tanga Yacht Club is a cool place to hang out, go for a swim in Tanga Bay, sunbathe, have some drinks (the bar offer's the lowest beverages prices in Tanga), and eat a pretty good meal. Several yachties (people who live on their yachts and travel the world) have made Tanga their second home. Friendly overall atmosphere.

Drinks & Nightlife

Tanga is about quiet and relaxed lifestyle, but if you absolutely have to go out to a night club for some drinks and dancing, then this is probably the place to be.

Sightseeing

When Germany occupied Tanganyika between the 1st and 2nd World Wars, their favourite place was Lushoto. The old scenic German built windy road that leads to the top of the Western Usambara Mountains still stands and the change in vegetation and overall climate up there make this area a beautiful place to visit for some hiking, locally made cheeses and jams, and breathtaking views of the plains below. There are some good old mountain B&Bs to stay at up there and enjoy a log fire at night.
