You will not be disappointed when you take the old original road that linked central Oregon with the valley. You will travel through a road cut through lava flows and the look out at the top is built from the lava sourced locally. The terrain transitions from the pine tree forest near Sisters to the lush vegetation on the west side of the mountains.

The terrain transitions from the pine tree forest near Sisters to the lush vegetation on the west side of the mountains.
This is a short distance south of Bend in the Paulina peak caldera. There are two lakes, Paulina and East with great fishing and hiking around the lakes. One trail traverses an obsidian flow of black sharp rock. This is a great place to spend a day or to camp.
