As soon as the temperature reaches around 20 degrees, J’ai Bistrot the garden takes out its wooden benches and tables, umbrellas, hammocks, chill vibes and folding beach chairs to inaugurate the urban warm season. The crowd is a good mix of young professionals, freelancers, families, dogs, hipsters and old hippies. A good place to have a chat and a drink in a very relaxed atmosphere. Possibly the most child-friendly environment in the city, also great for dog-owners. The prices are reasonable and the staff is very friendly. They serve plat du jour, also soup of the day and vegetarian dishes. They often host concerts and events at the weekends. 20 min walk from my house.

Many consider Acuarela to be an alternative place. It offers a good selection of teas, beers and wines in atmospheric surroundings. The building’s attic is decorated like a cosy home with familiar objects, while the open terrace has umbrellas as its roof, and doors as its tables. The best part is that it’s set in a green, leafy garden. Acuarela is also home to the Imbold Gallery – exhibition space dedicated to young Romanian artists. The graphic works on display are frequently changing, and according to the curator, it’s the perfect place to experience contemporary art. Concerts and theatre performances take place on the terrace almost every weekend. This bar's toilet is the coolest in town.

Parks & Nature

This perfect place to relax at any time of the day is just around the corner from our flat (we're located on an entrance into the park) that features quiet alleys, benches, open-air cafés, a great playground for children. Boats and paddle boats are available for rent in the summer, so you can also take a romantic ride on the lake. Originally designed by the German landscape gardener Wilhelm Meyer in the 1850s as an English garden, Cişmigiu is still a favorite place of walk for many Bucharesters. As a charming detail, the oldest newspaper kiosk in Bucharest can be seen near the entrance from Bd. Regina Elisabeta (45 sec walk from my house).

The Botanic Garden is more than 150 years old and has a special place in the hearts of Bucharest people. Children enjoy watching the fish, turtles and ducklings in the small ponds. Students explore the glasshouses with exotic plants. Lovers seek the hidden spots behind the old trees. Seniors enjoy a walk on the peaceful alleys. Apart from the native species, a vast array of nonnative trees and flowers are acclimated and thrive in the garden. The largest greenhouse is set up as a tropical forest. A botanic museum with over 5,000 species of plants is housed by a recently renovated beautiful building in the Brancovan style.

Monumental in design, the island was left unfinished when the revolution came in 1989. It was supposed to be one of Bucharest's main recreational sites. Now, the walk there is quite pleasant with the lake on one side and the many-colored yet bleak blocks of flats on the other side being a landmark of the reminiscent communist times. You should come and see it because is unknown to almost all the people visiting the city, because of its size and because it is hidden right in the middle of the city and also because you will feel like in Paris. The walk to the park will take from the bustling center to the quiet center and also if you will close your eyes you will feel the perfume of the Belle Epoque of Bucharest around you. Built in 1905 to honour the memory of Cazzavillan, the founder of the Romanian New York Times called "Universul". Especially lovely in the summer after 19:00.

Largest park of Bucharest, Romania, around Lake Herăstrău. The park has an area of about 187 ha, of which 74 ha is the lake. The area of the park has been inhabited since the Paleolithic, traces of settlements being found at the Herăstrău sand quarry, including flint tools made by the Mousterian culture, a culture generally associated with the Neanderthals. During the quaternary glaciation, the area was inhabited by large mammals such as the woolly rhinoceros and the mammoth, bones of the latter being found in the Herăstrău sand quarry. By the mid-19th century, Herăstrău was the main promenade area used by the Romanian élite for walks.

Stavropoleos monastery, founded in 1724 by the Greek monk Ioanikie Stratonikeas, is a masterpiece of Brancovan architectural style and a little oasis of tranquility in the heart of the old town. It's also one of the oldest and most beautiful churches in Bucharest, due to the rich stone-carved decorations and frescoes painted on the walls; an architectural must-see. Palace of Parliament is indisputably jaw-dropping. Constructed at Ceauşescu’s behest, its scale and opulence are head-spinning: 12 storeys (including four underground levels, one a nuclear bunker), 1,100 rooms, 4,500 chandeliers, and so on – although apparently not even 700 architects could satisfy Ceauşescu’s, or rather his wife’s, ever-changing whims. Guided tours (£5) take in a dozen or so of the largest and most extravagant rooms and conclude on the balconied terrace, affording fabulous views down bulevardul Unirii. For some Ceauşescu-linked culture, head to the Piata Revolutiei (the Revolution Square) and check out the pockmarked buildings. The square was the focal point of fighting during the 1989 revolution, which led to the end of the dictator’s regime. Macca-Villacrosse passage, connecting Calea Victoriei and a smaller street opening onto the banking headquarter in Lipscani area, was completed in 1891 and looks quite similar to other glass covered passages in Milan and Paris - which were quite fashionable at the turn of the 20th century. The Villacrosse passage is the best place in town to smoke water pipe with a variety of different flavors in one of the Egyptian themed cafes or to enjoy a cup of Turkish coffee. During your visit to the old town, be sure not to miss Hanul lui Manuc (Manuc's Inn)! Tourists and locals simply love it, because of its welcoming and unique appearance and because it provides refreshing shade in the torrid summer heat. After significant repair and renovation works they recently opened a Romanian and a Lebanese restaurant. One of Bucharest’s top tourist attractions because of its architectural value, 7 min from our house. If the bottom floors look like a historic building, towards the top, it turns into a modern style skyscraper. Built at the end of the 19th century, in December 1989, the building was almost entirely burned down and destroyed as it was suspected to shelter terrorists. After December 1989, the house was split into two: half of it became the headquarters for the Romanian Academy, while the second half belonged to the Union of Romanian Architects. Built in the French Renaissance architectural style, the landmark retains from the former imposing building two facades.

A major architectural landmark of the city and an example of the historic times Bucharest. The eclectic architecture combining a luxuriant ornamental repertoire harmonically used for the facade as well as for the interiors, fully reflects the atmosphere of the 1900’s. Comprised of a spectacular ballroom, serving also as a theater and a concert hall, with a library, a bowling alley and many rooms and shops on the ground level, it was an impressive structure interfusing architectural styles of the most renowned buildings of that time: the Chamber of Commerce, the Romanian Post Office, the CEC Savings House and the Supreme Court of Justice, all built during the same period.

Enescu is the internationally acclaimed Romanian composer, celebrated by an international music festival held in Bucharest every second year. The museum is housed by one of Bucharest’s flamboyant palaces, commissioned in the early 1900s in French Neo-Baroque and Neo-Rococo style by the wealthy statesman Gheorghe Grigore Cantacuzino. The museum gives a comprehensive overview of the composer’s life and works: photographs, musical instruments and original scores, conducting batons, dress coat, medals and diplomas. As he did not feel at home in the overwhelmingly ornate palace, he and his wife lived in the servants’ building behind the palace (open for visitors). A 15 min walk from my house.

As he did not feel at home in the overwhelmingly ornate palace, he and his wife lived in the servants’ building behind the palace (open for visitors). A 15 min walk from my house.
Housed in a beautiful villa with neo-classical Italian statues on the street facade, this small museum, which also served as the painter's workshop, exhibits many paintings, collectibles and furniture created by Theodor Aman himself. Aman museum is the oldest museum in Bucharest (1908) and it was recently opened for the public after extensive renovation and refurbishment. You may admire the fine architectural elements, the painter's workshop and the beautiful tiled stoves. It's definitely worth a visit for a better understanding of Romanian art within a 10 min walk from my house.

The Peasant's Museum shows the life of the Romanian peasant, it describes in detail how peasants used to work, live, dress. The museum provides a very good picture of their customs, traditions and lifestyle. From Spring to Autumn hold different open air exhibitions with hand made products, and traditional food. Artisans from all over Romania take part. The museum features the richest folk art collection in Romania, with over 90,000 artifacts that trace the colorful and diverse cultural life of the Romanian people. The Pottery Collection includes some 18,000 items. Equally impressive, the Costume Collection comprises almost 20,000 traditional folk costumes. It has a great souvenir shop.

The best way to understand the Romanian (sub)culture. Romanian kitsch is authentic as it is creative, ridiculous and proud in the same time. Also features a shop, only 10 min away from my flat.
