SAFETY With the warm summer temperatures in Southern Nevada, visitors to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area should keep the following safety tips in mind: ∗ Be aware of the forecast. Summer can be very hot in the Mojave Desert. Average highs at Red Rock Canyon reach the mid-90s°F during summer and certainly reach above 100°F during heat waves. Avoid outdoor activities during Excessive Heat Warnings, Watches, and/or Advisories. Red Rock Canyon’s forecast can be found here: National Weather Service ∗ Schedule outdoor activities carefully. Try to limit your outdoor activities to early morning (before 10AM) and evening hours (after 6PM) to avoid excessive heat and UV exposure. Rest often and in shaded areas if possible. ∗ Stay hydrated. During hot weather you will need to increase your fluid intake. Don’t wait until you are thirsty. Avoid alcohol, coffee, tea, and caffeinated soft drinks, which can cause dehydration. ∗ Be aware of no cell phone coverage. There is limited to no cell phone coverage at Red Rock Canyon, so make sure to communicate to someone about your destination and your estimated time of return. Because of that, we do not recommend using ride-sharing applications or taxis to visit. If you are getting dropped off, schedule your pickup time and location prior to being dropped off. There is no shuttle to drive visitors around the Scenic Drive. ∗ Dress appropriately. Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing. Use sunscreen and wear a hat & sunglasses when outdoors. ∗ Learn to spot the signs of heat-related illness, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke, and take prompt action in seeking emergency medical attention. ∗ Do not leave children or pets in cars. Even with the windows open, car interior temperatures can rise quickly in a matter of minutes. ∗ Do not over challenge yourself. There are plenty of trails at Red Rock Canyon for everyone’s experience and skill level. There is no shame in turning around if the trail is too strenuous or you are not properly prepared – your friends and family will thank you. ∗ Be prepared. Wear good hiking shoes or athletic shoes, long pants, and long sleeves to protect you from prickly vegetation and sun exposure. Bring with you a first-aid kit, snacks, water, and an extra layer. ∗ Hike in pairs. Use the buddy system when hiking. If hiking alone, make sure to communicate to someone prior to your trip where you are going and what time you expect to be back. ∗ Respect wildlife. Summer is a good time to see birds, burros, lizards, and snakes. If you come across any wildlife, please give it plenty of space, avoid feeding or touching it, and control your dog by keeping it on a short leash. Distance 2.4 miles; Average time: 1.5hrs; Difficulty: MODERATE Hike along this trail to see the intersection of great and colorful geologic eras.
