Shopping

Uzès is excellent for browsing the numerous small shops as well as visiting the twice weekly market.
Isobel , the owner is so knowledgeable and helpful . She has a good eye for what will suit you and equally will tell you when it doesn’t. She also knows what works with each item. Prices are reasonable and you will come away with something individual but practical and wearable. You can go in and browse but I always like to enlist her help.

Uzès hosts its main market on Saturday mornings with stalls filling the Square and surrounding streets. It's one of the best markets in France and can get very busy particularly in high season but not to be missed. On Wednesdays there is a smaller market mainly for fresh produce. There are also lots of independent and specialist shops as well as everything you would expect from a French town such as excellent bakeries and restaurants. If you like chocolate, you must visit Philippe Deschamp's shop, one of the best chocolatiers in the region.

We love the Friday market for its fresh local produce. Its much smaller than Uzès market and less crowded. The narrow streets of this village are full of pottery producers. If you're there in July, don't miss " The Terralha, the annual European festival of ceramic arts.

One of the most beautiful villages in France. It’s a mediaeval village on a fortified craggy hilltop. Fabulous views . Will be popular in the summer and hot as there’s little shade on the top. As you approach you will see parking on the right side of the road . Park the car and then walk till you find the steps up to the village.

Near to the famous Vallon Pont d’Arc . It’s a magnificent reconstruction- hard to believe it’s not real- of a prehistoric cave with the oldest cave paintings in the world. You can book in advance online and there are some tours in English. There are audio guides otherwise if you don't speak French but we found a lot more information from the guides and of course they point things out as they talk.

Across the river from Avignon, which of course is much better known and draws the crowds which means this town is much quieter than it would otherwise be. There is plenty to occupy you for a day's sightseeing. We love the tranquil gardens of L'abbaye Saint-Andre with its views across to Avignon, also the imposing Fort Saint-Andre and the Chartreuse.
