Yum, Yum. Best egg, maple bacon, hash-brown breakfast in town. They also make a delicious Bloody Mary. As a bonus, they sell the mix so you can take a little bit of Asheville magic home with you. This place is always packed in the morning, so you will wait to be seated, but it's worth it. Pro tip: They serve breakfast all day, so if you go for dinner or lunch, you are likely to cruise right in.

Truly exceptional ice cream, made right here in Asheville. Be brave and try some of their exoic flavors. Lots of options for those avoiding lactose. My vegan friend said it was excellent when she visited. If you are around on a Friday between 3pm and 9pm, you can go a little further down the road to the creamery, where they offer 'flights' of ice cream so you can sample multiple flavors (167 Haywood Rd)

Best donut you'll even have. Reminiscent of a beignet. They don't fry it until you order it. Bon Appetit named it one of the best donuts in the country. The W.A.L.K. has solid comfort food, but there is lots of that in Asheville. I'm putting it in this guide because on Tuesdays you can get good street tacos for $1.50-$2.00, so save you pennies to get into the Biltmore by eating here.

This is a real gem for curious beer lovers: get a flight of the same beer made with different yeasts to experience the impact on taste. Leave with some yeast for your own home brew. Off the beaten path, but a great option for a hearty meal. The owner is from Maine, but lived just across the border from Québec, so you will get yummy French Canadian poutine, tourtière, and they stock HP Sauce. This is my favorite little secret in the River Arts District: a small unmarked windowless bar called Crucible. It's known for its Moscow Mule with mescaline, but their hot tottie is my favorite. The menu has plenty more to offer. They don't advertise, so you won't see a sign outside. To get there, cross Roberts street from the Wedge and look for an unmarked door just north of the North Carolina Glass Center. For hours, go to https://www.facebook.com/cruciblebaravl/ Once inside, you will get to experience North Carolina's quirky liquor laws. By law, if a bar does not sell food, it can only serve members, so you will have to fork out an entire dollar to join.

My absolutely favorite hike in the area is Wesser Creek Trail. Once at the top, climb the fire tower to get a 360 degree view of the Appalachian mountains from above the canopy. It's a 6.6 mile lightly trafficked out and back located near Bryson City that features a great forest setting. The trail is rated as difficult. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/north-carolina/wesser-creek-trail There is also a shorter route to the tower from the other side. I have not done it, but I have heard it is quite steep. If you go this way, let me know what you think. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/north-carolina/wesser-bald-fire-tower-via-appalachian-trail

If you want to take a nice walk through nature without leaving the City, check out Hominy Creek Park: a peaceful, tree-lined trail along the French Broad River. It's our favorite stroll. If you get ambitious (or if you want a great morning run), link this trail with the trail at Carrier Park. Incorporating both is about 3 miles rounds trip. If you want to go all out crazy, the trail at Carrier Park links to the trail in the French Broad River Park.

This is a great stop if you are heading to Pisgah National Forest for a hike, or if you want to enjoy the mountains on well maintained paved path to accommodate mobility issues. The Cradle of Forestry is the birthplace of forestry science for the nations! There are 13 miles of paved interpretive trails, interactive exhibits, film, music, drama, guided tours, nature programs, craft demonstrations. The site is open to visitors everyday from mid-April to early November. If you are visiting Asheville between late May and early June, be sure to check out their event calendar. They have Blue Ghost Firefly tours. These little lighting bugs are my favorite. Instead of blinking on and off, they hold their glow and look like hundreds of little gnomes carrying lanterns on the forest floor. Be sure to book early. They sell out.

Landmarks

Nowhere near as famous as the Biltmore Estates, this is our other 'grand' resort. It's free to enter the grounds. It has an interesting history, which you can learn about on their tour wed-sat at 9am. The tour cost $10/person. The real reason to go, if you are not staying there, are the mountains. All the restaurants have breathtaking views. If you don't want a full sit-down meal, get some drinks and snacks on the Cocktail Sunset Terrace and watch the sun fade down behind Pisgah. There is also an excellent underground Spa onsite.

This place is a favorite of mine because it's a great concept. The owners love wine and love books, so they married the two. Enjoy a great glass of Malbec with a cheese plate while sitting among a maze of bookshelves. While you are there, dip into the Grove Arcade. It's full of interesting boutiques and the architecture is beautiful.

This is on of the great little shops along Haywood Rd in West Asheville. It's full of uncommon greeting cards and wrapping paper. I mention it here because they have a selection of Asheville related goodies that make for unique souvenirs or gifts.
