Morokulien is a six-hectare area on the border between Norway (municipality of Eidskog) and Sweden (Eda Municipality). The name Morokulien was coined in the radio program "Över alla gränser" sent from Morokulien in 1959 and has since stuck. It is made up from the Norwegian and the Swedish words for "fun" (moro and kul, respectively). In 1910 the Nordic Peace Congress in Stockholm decided that a peace monument should be raised on the border between Sweden and Norway to celebrate 100 year of peace between the countries. The building of the peace monument was finished in 1914 (WIKIPEDIA).

Ritamäki was the last settlement in Värmland where descendants of the old Finnish settlers lived. Ritamäki and its surroundings are protected as a cultural heritage site and nature reserve. You can find rare plants and flowers here. From the parking at Lake Lomsen, you need to walk about 1,3 km uphill to arrive at the Ritamäki settlement. The Seven Croft Trail ends in Ritamäki. This is a beautiful 7,9 km long hiking trail, starting from the parking at Lake Lomsen and going past seven Finnish settlements in the area, in Norway and Sweden, including Ritamäki (www.visittorsby.se)

Domkyrka / Cathedral in Karlstads For four hundred years the church was situated by the side of the river, where Stadshotellet is located today. The old church was destroyed however, by a fire in 1719 and a new church was built between 1723 and 1730 on Lagberget, by Christian Haller from Sachsen. Sixty years passed before the church was completed. The great fire in 1865 also affected the cathedral. The church bells tumbled down and the steeple fell on the church roof, which caught fire and then collapsed. The church tower was rebuilt again however, and it is the one we see today. The latest restoration was carried through in 1998.

Shopping

One of Scandinavia’s biggest shopping center is in Charlottenberg (16 km). Because the big cloth and sport shops have little storage place, you can get good bargains when there come in new collections. Apparently biggest food shop in Scandinavia is Hypermat. However, Lidl is at least as good ( and cheaper (: and cheaper !).

Famous and appreciated restaurant in the nature. Tvällen offers a menu with many alternatives from the wild. Good food, but as well a bit expensive. Limited opening hours, so make sure it is open when you plan to eat there!
