You're going to have to wait (and wait, and wait), but its worth it. Chef Aaron Silverman’s Capitol Hill restaurant has garnered a deluge of well-deserved national attention, including a Michelin star. There are a few ways to experience Rose’s Luxury: Get there at least an hour before it opens at 5pm or book one of the four indoor tables -- or the spot on the roof -- to enjoy the tasting menu (reservations open up at 11am on Mondays). Either way, make no mistake: It will be worth it, especially if you get the lychee salad.

The Howard Theatre has been a landmark of the Shaw neighborhood for over 100 years, originally opening in 1910, and enjoying its third and most recent renovation in 2012. The iconic Beaux-Arts building is on the US National Register of Historic Places, and not just for looks: The venue launched the careers of many artists -- most famously Ella Fitzgerald, winner of an open mic night contest at the Howard in the early 1930s. The first distillery to open its doors in DC post-Prohibition aptly named its signature product after a bootlegger rarely seen without his signature green felt fedora. George Cassiday originally sold booze on the sly to Congressmen out of a House office building. But, after loose lips got him caught, he bounced over to the Senate where folks were (and still are?) better at keeping quiet. Eastern Market’s Hill’s Kitchen is a great place for newlyweds, new homeowners, and newbie chefs looking to stock their kitchens for the first time with high-quality classic pieces. It’s also a perfect place to find a present for the skilled chef in your life. There’s a fair bit of fun and whimsy in the store with their state-themed cookie cutters, and DC-centric accessories, but the staff isn’t playing around (which is good, because, well -- knives).
The Eastern Market is a massive celebration of all things food, centered around a huge indoor market selling any ingredient you could hope for. Add to that a Tuesday farmer's market, a weekend outdoor market for arts and crafts, AND a flea market, and you get the Eastern Market.

Sure, you can just show up and get corralled into a "visitor center." But if you want to experience the Capitol in a real way, contact your senator's office, and arrange for a tour. You'll need to actually plan for this -- like three months in advance -- but it's so worth it. See if you can't coax them into letting you see the weird little subway under the Capitol, too. Free.

What it is: A public pool It's free to DC residents -- just don’t forget to pack your driver’s license in your pool bag. Non-residents can fill out an online pool pass form and pay a small fee. Banneker is quite an expansive public pool with diving boards, lap lanes, and an occasional "adult swim". Plus, people on Yelp can’t shut up about the "great people watching".
