Agia Pelagia (Santa Pelagia) is located 13min (8,5km by car) northwest of our house, on the south side of the small Cape Souda, surrounded by several coves with beautiful beaches. Agia Pelagia, was initially a small and picturesque settlement used by the residents of Achlada village. The main beach of the settlement is a long and narrow beach with sand and greenish water. The Turks named this beach of Agia Pelagia as Tsanak Limani, because the round shape of it reminded them of a plate (tsanak = plate). Indeed, the water is almost always calm here and the bay forms a natural quiet harbor. The beach offers many options for watersports, diving, umbrellas, food nice restaurants. The main beach of Agia Pelagia is well protected from the north winds by the Cape of Souda.

Psaromoura Beach is located 16min (16km by car) northwest of our house and just 500m north of Agia Pelagia. Like all beaches in the area, it faces to the east and is sheltered from the northwest winds usually blowing in the area. Right on the beach there are no hotels or restaurants, but there are many facilities in a walking distance. The beach is pebbly with crystal clear water and is very popular to locals, rather than tourists.

Rodia is a picturesque village built amphitheatrically on the hill above our neighborhood. It is 4km close to the house (10min by car). It is a traditional settlement with a panoramic view of Heraklion. Don't miss to spot the "Mansion of Modinos". A beautiful tower of the 15th century, used back then for military perposes, that now hosts several exhibitions throughout the year. The village has many options of excellent traditional food! At "Rodi"(pomegranate) Restaurant, try if you like, the "antikristo". It is a traditional technique of cooking lamp meat on Crete. On your day trip there, i would suggest you also visit the beautiful Venetian monastery of Savathiana (4km far from the village).

Fodele is another very beautiful and traditional village, located just 16km west from the house. Is a rural area that is very charming and popular among local people and tourists on Crete. Take a walk to the surrounding area just outside the village to enjoy the beauty of the Cretan landscape and flora. Fodele is famous for the optimal quality of all its agriculture products (especially the oranges/mandarines). It is a very green area, with a beautiful landscape. It has a pretty park, next to the main square of the village that offers dense shade and several sites for walk and picnic. The small river that crosses the middle of the village has water running through even in early summer, which is rare for most places on Crete. People from Heraklion and the surrounds often visit Fodele in the weekends, to enjoy a walk in the nature and the excellent local Cretan food offered in the area. I would suggest you try the lamp chops at “Yiasemi” restaurant. Another reason that this area is very known, is because Fodele is the birthplace of the famous painter Domenico Theotokopoulos (El Greco). Do not miss to visit the little museum there.

On the west of the village Rogdia, is the entrance of the small gorge of Spiliotissa or Rextra. The route starts from the old watermill of Koukos, on the main road connecting Rogdia to Achlada, and descends to the most impressive part of it, the 10m high waterfall Rechtra, reached via a quite steep descend with ropes. Descending the gorge, we pass by some small waterfalls, the cave chapel of Panagia Spiliotissa, and reach the beach of Paliokastro. In the middle of the gorge, is a cave that an agiographer has turned into a workshop. It is nice to visit him, see his work and maybe buy something.
