Some of these are relatively near Navy Point, some may be near where you’re headed....
River Road is a place we like to let the dogs run a bit after a visit to Johnson Beach or Big Lagoon State Park. It’s small, but there’s a beach and often other friendly dogs with their owners.

There are fairly large dog runs for both smaller dogs and larger dogs with some shade and a bench or two in each. This park is only about :12 from Cute Cottage @ Navy Point (Pensacola). The playground in the photos is not in the middle of the dog parks. There’s also a boat launch near the west end of Bayou Grande.

Bayview Park is a great park in the East Hill subdivision of Pensacola on Bayou Texar. It has two runs, one for small dogs and another for small to large dogs. Both have covered seating areas and trees, plus there’s a dog beach west of the new community building. In addition it has lighted tennis courts, playgrounds, a rowing club, and a senior center.

There are numerous walks, some on the sand, some - like the one the alligator was photographed from - are raised wooden walkways enabling rare encounters with a variety of nature throughout this large park across the inter-coastal waterway from Johnson Beach on Perdido Key.

This is about Gulf Islands National Seashore, Johnson Beach. It’s our favorite beach in the Pensacola area as it is the most natural of the area beaches with white sand beaches and dunes that stretch on for 4-5 miles to the east beyond the 2+ mile drive into the park. Unfortunately dogs are not permitted on the beach, but there’s an elevated walkway near the northwest end of the park where dogs may accompany you. The walk leads to an ideal spot for launching your kayak - there’s also a drive and small parking area. https://www.nps.gov/guis/planyourvisit/basicinfo.htm https://npplan.com/parks-by-state/florida-national-parks/gulf-islands-national-seashore-overview/gulf-islands-national-seashore-florida-park-at-a-glance/gulf-islands-national-seashore-florida-perdido-key-area/gulf-islands-national-seashore-florida-johnson-beach/

We haven’t spent much time at Pensacola Beach, since our preference is enjoying the sand and surf without the crowds, restaurants and other amenities you can find nearby. That’s not to say Johnson Beach on Perdido Key doesn’t get crowded on summer weekends, but we have a tendency to go during the week and at less popular times. The pier is something we’ve yet to experience, but we will soon. Note: A prepaid pass is required for the toll-bridge leading to the beach.

This pocket park is only 6 or 7 minutes from Cute Cottage @ Navy Point, and is a great location for launching your kayak, SUP, or cooling your feet in Bayou Grande, a more calm body of water than the Gulf. On a recent visit there were only a few other families there; one with their dog who also was enjoying the refreshing waters to cool off.

Sadly, another casualty of the pandemic - permanently closed. If you didn't bring coffee or just wanted to go out for a smoothie and breakfast, The Beachy Barista was near by on Navy Blvd north of Gulf Beach Hwy or Barrancas Av on the west side of the street. We will keep our eyes open for another recommendation.

We had dinner just once with friends before heading back to Wisconsin for the summer and all enjoyed their dinners very much. The executive chef and owner operated a former favorite Pensacola restaurant, Skopelos at New World, until it had to close after damage to the building from Hurricane Sally. We recommend this to all; there is usually at least one vegan option.

Pot Roast & Pinot, another downtown favorite succumbed to the pandemic and reopened as 86 Forks. It now features small plates and design your own noodle bowls, and the changing menu usually includes at least one vegan as well as vegetarian options. As P&P was a fav, we expect this wil again be a place we can highly recommend - although we've not been there yet.
