Western Crete is a thriving geographical area with a great variety of sites of natural beauty, archaeological monuments and unique culinary opportunities that can turn your stay in your most unforgettable holidays. In order to enrich your experience during your stay, we have collected all sites of interest that are located in close distance from our apartments. So you don’t have to look for anything! You just pick a choice and make your daily plan.

For sea food and fresh fish, one of the best fish taverns is “Pirofani” at Blite Souda bay just 5 km. from the apartments. Ideal outdoor setting with tables by the seashore and fish caught daily by the local fishermen. Second choice would be the “Apostolis” tavern in the old port of Chania. In this case you can enjoy uncompromised quality of fresh fish and fish food as surrounded by the charming, historical surrounding of the Venetian port.

For Cretan traditional recipes and oven baked bread, the tavern “Aetofolia” in the village Samonas-Apokoronou just 16 km from our apartments combines excellent taste with breath-taking views over the valley. For Cretan traditional cuisine in an idyllic scenery amongst streams and plane trees merged with traditional architecture, the village of Stilo-Apokoronou hosts the tavern “Pissas”.

For the best Pizza and Pasta at Chania, the “L’ Angolo” pizzeria is located in downtown Chania.

And of course Crete is the absolute vegan/vegetarian paradise. In all aforementioned taverns you can find unique varieties of leaf salads seasoned with olive oil and lemon, baked beans cooked in the oven (gigantes), stuffed tomatoes with rice (gemista), mature goat and sheep cheese, different types of pies with rustic pastry, baked oven bread and rusks.

But Cretan cuisine is not only stews and grilled meat. The real Cretan experience lies in the Greek “tapas” dishes that are enjoyed with Cretan raki, the so-called “meze” dishes. At the village of Batolakos 18 km. from our apartments, the raki-tavern of “Kapileio” provides one of the most authentic experiences of the kind.

Crete is the centre of the Minoan culture, which is reported as the first European culture dating from 7.000 B.C. 136 km from our apartments lies Knossos, which is the largest preserved Minoan palatial centre. 125 km from us lies Phaistos, the most wealthy and powerful Minoan city in southern Crete.

But in close vicinity to our apartments, there is equally an abundance of interesting sites that will make your stay exciting. Chania city is praised with three amazing museums: the archaeological, the byzantine and the Minoan’s world 3D museum.

Just 23 km. from us lies the Mycenean settlement of Kylindra at the village of Samonas Apokoronou.

70 km. from us are to be found the remains of two important Hellenistic cities Tarra and Yrtakina. The acropolis of Yrtakina is well preserved with its double walls and the sanctuary of semi-god Panas. The acropolis of Tarra preserves its walls too and a temple dedicated to Apollo.

Within the city of Chania, over the hill of Castelli, are to be found the remains of the proto-minoan settlement of Castelli, the earliest Minoan settlement of Europe. In the archaeological site you can see the rests from wealthy estates, humble houses, streets, shops, paved floors and storage places dating from the 3rd millennium B.C.

One of the most inspiring walks that you can have from our apartments is to the Minoan estate of Nerokouros. Paved floors, walls, remnants of the doors, bronze tools, weaponry and massive storage vessels are easily accessible, although they are all dating from 1700 B.C.

Another exciting site to visit just 15 km. from us, is the shaft grave of Stylos at the village Stylos Apokoronou. The monumental grave preserves its chamber and entrance pathway almost intact as dating back in 1390 BC. A trip back in time. A second shaft grave, that of Maleme, lies 24 km. from us. This too dates from 1390, but its much more impressive. It somehow reminds of the Mycenaean shaft graves with its monumental portal, the narrow pathway and the mystical, inner chamber with its conical apex. It was most convincingly the last residence of a local ruler.

The most important archaeological sites just 14 km. from our apartments are Aptera and Kydonia. The acropolis of Aptera preserves its walls almost in its entirety, although it dates from 1400 BC. The ancient city of Kydonia was to be found in the same place to the modern city of Chania. Today the biggest part of the ancient city is covered under the modern city, but at the hill of Castelli, the visitor can see the remains of the classical and roman phases of the city, when it was one of the most important port-cities of the Mediterranean.

56 km. from us is to be found the ancient city of Falasarna. You can combine your swimming in the famous Falasarna beach with a visit to one of the most important port-cities of the 4th century B.C. In the site the visitor will be amazed by the workshops, the ship docks, the fortressing walls, the castle with its two temples, the cisterns and the Hellenistic graveyard.
