Adventure

Turangi is where the adventure can begin!
This is such a great experience and loads of fun. Tongariro River Rafting has got what it takes to make this an amazing day. The guides will make sure your experience is personal. Tongariro River Rafting also does some great conservation work involving Whio or Blue Duck. For an 'elevated' experience choose the 'Access 10' trip. For the experienced fly-fisherman this company does amazing fly-fishing expeditions for a day.

This is considered one of New Zealand's most popular day hikes. From us it is only a 15 minute drive to the Ketetahi car parkpark where the track begins. Hike 19km through dramatic volcanic landscapes complete with steaming vents, volcanic cones and emerald-coloured lakes. A certain level of fitness is required. Be aware of the forever changing weather in this alpine terrain and make sure to carefully check the weather forecast.

The Tongariro River Trail; bike or walk Follow the banks of the Tongariro River alongside rolling farmland and through native bush and urban areas, and enjoy magnificent river views - it's an easy, mainly flat track with multiple entry points so a great option for children. The Tongariro National Trout Centre is a great place to break your journey, with lovely picnic areas and facilities on site. The track is a grade 2 trail on mostly flat terrain, making it suitable for children and beginner riders to enjoy. It’s a 15km loop track of undulating, yet comfortable ground. It will take a family a couple of hours to complete or close to an hour for more experienced riders. https://www.lovetaupo.com/en/operators/tongariro-river-trail/

Don’t worry, it’s not all a strenuous workout to see some cool stuff in the Tongariro National Park. Tawhai Falls is the most accessible waterfall in Tongariro by being a mere 20-minute return walk from the roadside. It’s definitely worth the photo stop. Location: On State Highway 48, 4km from Whakapapa village.

Food scene

Small and intimate, this used to be the best place for coffees, condiments or lunch. After a change of ownership a couple of years ago, the coffee is not quite up to scratch (our opinion entirely) and the service can be - at times - slow, but it is still a pleasant stop on 'riverside' Turangi (Taupahi Road).

Fly-fishing

Creel Tackle House is the best place for advice, great gear, expertise or simply a fly-fishing chat. Co-owner Grant Alley also known as the 'Fishing Buddy' can take you to some good spots. Grant is not a guide as such but a local who knows the area like the back of his hand and is happy to 'guide' people who can catch a fish. Creel Tackle house will help you book a fishing guide if required and help you with the correct gear. https://creeltackle.com/

They say Turangi is the “Trout Fishing Capital of the World” and for good reason! The Tongariro River is a world-class fishing river where the population of rainbow trout leave the waters of Lake Taupo every year to spawn in. Whether you want to try fly-fishing in the Tongariro River or join a fishing charter on Lake Taupo, you’ll quickly see why the Turangi locals are “hooked” on trout fishing. A great place to start with planning your fishing experience is with the local fishing lodges like Tongariro Lodge or hire a fly-fishing guide. Location: Tongariro River. Look out for fishing access signs along the Tongariro River Trail. You must hold a Taupo District Fishing License to fish in the river. https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/central-north-island/places/taupo-trout-fishery/where-to-fish/rivers-and-streams/lower-tongariro-river/
