Hike 19km through dramatic volcanic landscapes complete with steaming vents, volcanic cones and emerald-coloured lakes. A certain level of fitness is required. Be aware of the forever changing weather in this alpine terrain and make sure to carefully check the weather forecast.

Tongariro Alpine Crossing
This is considered one of New Zealand's most popular day hikes. From us it is only a 15 minute drive to the Ketetahi car parkpark where the track begins. Hike 19km through dramatic volcanic landscapes complete with steaming vents, volcanic cones and emerald-coloured lakes. A certain level of fitness is required. Be aware of the forever changing weather in this alpine terrain and make sure to carefully check the weather forecast.
If you love mountain biking and want to push yourself this is the ride. Known as one of the best adventure mountain bike rides in the North Island, the 42 Traverse is a 46km multi-use track that travels through the Tongariro Forest Conservation Area. The Grade 3 challenging trail will take riders 3-7 hours to ride, with a number of sections to test your fitness and skill level.

State Highway 47If you love mountain biking and want to push yourself this is the ride. Walk in the magnificent forest of Lake Rotopounamu to the sounds of birds and the views of this crater lake. Rotopounamu means “Lake Greenstone” in Maori and you’ll see why when you lay your eyes on the beautiful green hues of the water. The 2-hour loop walk around the lake takes you through forest to three beaches alongside the lake.
Location: 12km from Turangi. Find the walk and car park signposted about 8km along State Highway 47.
For one of the best free geothermal parks in the country, visit the Tokaanu Thermal Walk! This super easy 20-minute loop walk takes you through native bush to several pools of hot springs, bubbling mud and colourful geothermal features.
Location: 6km from Turangi. Take State Highway 41 for 5km and follow the brown signs for “Hot Pools”. The Tokaanu Thermal Walk starts beside the Tokaanu Hot Pools.

Don’t worry, it’s not all a strenuous workout to see some cool stuff in the Tongariro National Park. Tawhai Falls is the most accessible waterfall in Tongariro by being a mere 20-minute return walk from the roadside. It’s definitely worth the photo stop.

Don’t worry, it’s not all a strenuous workout to see some cool stuff in the Tongariro National Park. Tawhai Falls is the most accessible waterfall in Tongariro by being a mere 20-minute return walk from the roadside. It’s definitely worth the photo stop.

Food scene
Small and intimate, this used to be the best place for coffees, condiments or lunch. After a change of ownership a couple of years ago, the coffee is not quite up to scratch (our opinion entirely) and the service can be - at times - slow, but it is still a pleasant stop on 'riverside' Turangi (Taupahi Road).

Grant is not a guide as such but a local who knows the area like the back of his hand and is happy to 'guide' people who can catch a fish. Creel Tackle house will help you book a fishing guide if required and help you with the correct gear.
